President Donald Trump on Wednesday took to social media platform X to criticize the stock market's decline following strong jobs data, and forcefully rejected the idea that growth fuels inflation. Trump said the jobs numbers released earlier in the day were "GREAT" and that the market should have gone up, but instead fell due to what he called a "fear" of inflation, describing the situation as "crazy."
"GROWTH DOES NOT CAUSE INFLATION!" Trump wrote, accusing "stupid people" of trying to stop the "Great Upward Momentum" every time the economy performs well. He argued that the U.S. should aim for GDP growth of 15% to 20%, not the current 2% to 4%, and claimed that each percentage point increase in interest rates costs the U.S. $650 billion a year. He said the country should enjoy the lowest interest rates in the world.
Trump warned that if the current "theory" persists, the U.S. will never achieve the "True Economic Greatness" it deserves, and lamented that good economic news is being "killed" due to inflation fears.
