Micron August 25: Q3 $41.46B (+346%), Q4 $50B Guidance Intact, Sustainability Risk Test Looms

TradingKey - Micron (MU) began the week of August 25 with strong Q3 numbers. However, stock fluctuations reflect worries about the company's pricing power. Key stats include Q3 revenue of $41.46B (+346% YoY, +74% seq), $25.11 EPS, and $25.39B of operating cash flow. Q4 guidance projects revenue of $50B (+21% seq), and a gross margin of 86% with EPS of $31 remaining unchanged. Micron’s HBM4 36GB 12-highs are in volume production at Micron for NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin with 2.8 TB/s and 20% power efficiency gain. HBM4E is under development for a planned 2027 release.

On August 20, Micron announced they are investing $10B to create Micron Research Labs in Boise, ID with a planned groundbreaking in 2027. On August 13, Micron also launched Micron Ventures Paradigm Fund, a $250M investment into AI startups.

Micron’s stock sold off on August 18 (-7%) but rallied 4.1% on August 17 on new US policies regarding the sourcing of Chinese memory. Micron stock is trading at $910.22. A breakdown of the price is forming under an ascending channel, meaning demand for the stock is weakening. RSI is at 40. The major concern is whether gross margin will remain at 86% or if pricing for memory will normalize.

Q3 Revenue $41.46B: Extraordinary Leverage from Pricing Power

Micron’s revenue for the Q3 is at $41.46B (+346% YoY, +74% seq from $23.86B). Non-GAAP EPS was $25.11 and cash from operations was $25.39B. Micron reported a record gross margin of 84.6% for Q3. Growth was primarily the result of an increase in pricing and sales volume, accounting for 2/3 and 1/3 of the growth respectively. Micron’s product mix also demonstrates operating leverage with a substantial shift in the product mix to high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and high-capacity data center memory versus the mix of products

Q4 Guidance Remains $50B (+21% Seq), 86% Margin — The Critical Test

For Q4, we expect revenue to be ~$50B (±$1B). Expected gross margin is ~86% with a non-GAAP EPS of $31 (±$1). At the mid-point, this represents a 21% sequential increase from the already record-setting Q3. An 86% gross margin suggests that the memory market is extremely tight with advanced products shortage, and demand is surpassing the available supply. The main area of focus is the sustainability of this economic situation. When manufacturers increase production, this will likely normalize the pricing and we will see a significant reduction in margins.

HBM4 High-Volume Production, HBM4E Development 2027

HBM4 (High Bandwidth Memory) produced for NVIDIA Vera Rubin. Micron HBM4 has 36GB 12-high modules that offer more than 2.8 TB/s bandwidth per stack — more than double the approximately 1.4 TB/s delivered by HBM3E at the same configuration — while also achieving 20%+ better power efficiency. Micron has sampled customer qualification units of its 48GB 16-high HBM4, which offers 33% more capacity per stack than the standard 36GB 12-high product.

HBM4E is now in development with a volume production target of 2027. HBM4E utilizes 1-Gamma DRAM technology. With HBM4E and recent Micron developments, you can access next-gen NVIDIA AI systems. There is competition for the highest-value NAND from SK hynix and Samsung.

$10B Micron Research Labs (Aug 20), $250M Paradigm Fund (Aug 13)

Micron Research Labs by Micron ($10B projected), with a focus on memory and AI architectures, was announced on Aug 20. AI architectures and semiconductor manufacturing will help Micron meet its memory goals in the future. Micron announced the Paradigm Fund on Aug 13 ($250M focus on AI model architectures, AI, and robotics). With the Paradigm Fund, Micron Ventures has a total investment of $550M. Memory and storage requirements will change based on new AI architectures.

AI Inference Could Drive Additional Demand; PCIe Gen6 SSD Expansion

The dominant AI compute workload is transitioning from training to inference. This is expected to be 2/3 of total spending on AI compute by the end of 2026. Inference requires a lot of memory due to the size of context and reduced latency. Micron is poised to benefit from HBM, DDR5, and SOCAMM memory and storage. The introduction of the 9650 Gen6 PCIe SSD doubles the reading speed and offers better performance per watt compared to Gen5. The trend of AI infrastructures moving beyond HBM implies the need for a memory/storage hierarchy.

China Competition Intensifying: ChangXin, US Policy Buffer

ChangXin Memory Technologies is staking a claim on DRAM. This is most likely a losing bet. High barriers to advanced HBM packaging/stacking mean there is more to lose in the case of less-sophisticated DRAM. US policy will afford some protection as August reports claimed Washington’s position was to discourage US companies from sourcing their memory from China. With this news, MU rallied 4.1% on August 17. The memory industry in China is publicly stated as a competitive industry, and with a focus on lower cost DRAM, price competition is quickly becoming a concern.

August 18 Selloff (-7%): Financing Concerns, Not Earnings Warning

MU fell 7% during the broad-based chip sector selloff on 18 Aug caused by the rising Treasury yields and qualms about financing AI data-center projects. This was not caused by Micron's earnings warning. This is important because Micron's growth is predicated on hyperscalers' continued aggressive AI capex (NVIDIA, AMD) and accelerators that require Micron memory. If advanced financing stems cloud spending on AI, memory demand could slow even in a shortage.

Technical: $910.22 Support, Breakdown Below $927-$933 Moving Averages

Current price for MU is $910.22. Broke below ascending channel. Falls below moving averages ($927.01, $933.34). RSI is 40 (neither oversold nor neutral). First support $900 (a psychologically important number).

Micron Price Chart - Source: Tradingview

If $900 is broken, $851 is the main support. Above, resistance $960.92; break there will target $1030.76. Weakness in the chart means selling and funding concerns, not weakening fundamentals.

Key Levels

  • Support levels: $899.96 (immediate), $851.07 (major)
  • Resistance levels: $927 - $933 (moving averages), $960.92, $1,030.76
  • Current sentiment: Bearish below $927, oversold level not yet reached

Bottom Line: Fundamentals Intact, Sustainability Risk Rising

MU Aug 25: Q3 $41.46B (+346% YoY, reported June 24), Q4 $50B guidance (+21% sequential) 86% margin, EPS $25.11. HBM4 high-volume production, $10B Research Labs, $250M Paradigm Fund. No guidance cut expected through Aug 25.

What this means for investors: The strong fundamentals of Micron remain intact (forecast of Q3 at $41.46B, targeting Q4 at $50B, high-volume production of HBM4 Vera Rubin). The real challenge is sustainability. At an 86% margin, this is an extraordinary circumstance that is likely to shift as competitors begin to fill the void. Concerns of China’s DRAM competition strongly combine with the expansion of AI infrastructure.
