Sandisk, Alibaba, Micron, Steel Dynamics, and More Stocks That Explain Today's Market

Stock futures were falling to start the week with tech names leading the way lower ahead of Nvidia's key earnings report.

The artificial-intelligence trade looked set for another wobble as high-flying momentum stocks, such as memory storage company Sandisk, and optical networking companies Lumentum and Coherent, were among the sharpest decliners. Nvidia has a chance to turn things around for tech when it reports earnings after the close of trading Wednesday.

These stocks were among the movers ahead of the open Monday:

Alibaba fell after the Chinese e-commerce giant announced a $10.4 billion share sale to raise funds to bolster its AI spending. The new shares, for investors outside the U.S., were priced at 112.70 Hong Kong dollars, a discount to its Friday closing price of HK$123. The stock fell 8.5% in Hong Kong and its American depositary receipts fell 2%.

Samsung Electronics fell 9% in South Korean trading after unveiling plans to buy back up to $79 billion worth of stock. Investors may have been expecting an even bigger payout from the world's largest memory-chip maker.

The malaise spread to U.S. memory stocks as Micron and Western Digital, alongside chip names including Intel and Marvell Technology.

Steel Dynamics was rising 6% after trade talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed over the weekend. Rival steel producer Nucor also was up more than 3%. Both fell sharply last week amid reports that a trade deal between the two countries would reduce tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports.
