Strategy Didn't Buy Bitcoin as Cryptos Surged, but it Wasn't Sitting Still

Strategy didn't buy any Bitcoin last week, but it's still making the most of the recent cryptocurrency comeback.

Bitcoin rose another 3% to $79,400 early Monday and has climbed around 25% over the past week. Strategy shares, which trade under the ticker MSTR, are doing even better-up around 4.5% Monday and 34% higher over a week.

It was beating other crypto-exposed stocks, too. Coinbase rose 0.8%, while Robinhood fell 0.5%.

The largest corporate holder of Bitcoin opted not to buy any more of the cryptocurrency last week, according to a filing early Monday. But it was still proactive, selling $2 billion worth of common stock and immediately putting the proceeds to work.

The company added $300 million to its U.S. dollar reserve, taking its total to $5.1 billion, while also repurchasing $136 million worth of its preferred stock.

What it did with the rest of the money is perhaps more intriguing. It put $1.59 billion into a new dollar-liquidity cash pool called USD Cash.

Strategy said it would be a "more flexible source of liquidity," that could be used in the future to buy more Bitcoin, pay dividends on its preferred stock, repurchase more MSTR or preferred stock, or redeem its outstanding convertible notes.

That added financial flexibility may help explain why Strategy stock is outperforming Bitcoin and other crypto-exposed stocks Monday.
