Japanese stocks declined at the start of the trading week, tracking overnight losses in U.S. technology shares, as investors turned their focus to the Federal Reserve's upcoming annual economic policy symposium.

The Nikkei 225 slipped 37.41 points, or 0.06%, to 65,978.95 at the opening bell.

Investors are cautious ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's address at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, later this week.

Governor Kazuo Ueda is not expected to speak at the Jackson Hole gathering, though he may hold a press conference following the G20 finance leaders' meeting in the United States next week.

Markets are keenly awaiting any signals on the future direction of interest rates, with crude oil prices climbing higher and bond yields touching multi-decade peaks, adding to inflation concerns.

Domestically, Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino will begin a series of public remarks by the end of the month, setting the stage for the central bank's next policy announcement scheduled for Sept. 18.
