Many are now looking to add artificial intelligence (AI) to customer service, inventory planning and internal workflows. Case in point: The Ministry of Digital Development and Information reported that SME adoption of AI rose to 14.5% in 2024 from 4.2% a year earlier. Meanwhile, the National AI Impact Programme aims to support 10,000 enterprises over three years.\nPutting AI to work, however, requires more than choosing the right tools. Those systems must remain connected to cloud platforms, company data and other business applications. A weak or slow network can interrupt automated processes, delay decisions and leave staff waiting for tools that were meant to save time.\nAs AI becomes part of daily operations, businesses will therefore need networks that are resilient and reliable, deliver high performance through ultra-low latency, and can scale securely as demand grows.\nKeeping networks resilient\nA reliable network is one that is planned with redundancy and continues running even when one connection fails. Recognising this, SPTel provides an alternate fibre backbone by running its fibre alongside the power network cables instead of traditional telco ducts.\nSince these pathways are physically separate from incumbent telco networks, businesses are less exposed to single points of failure which may result in disruptions. This matters because a network outage can already disrupt cloud applications, automated workflows and customer-facing services. Adding AI increases the dependence on continuous connectivity because applications will need consistent access to data and computing resources.\nThe same requirement extends beyond the office. Payment terminals, tracking devices, electric-vehicle chargers and building sensors often rely on mobile networks to transmit information. When a connection lags or fails, transactions may be delayed and systems may lose access to current data.\nSPTel's Multi-Network M2M SIM is designed to reduce that risk. It can connect to three mobile networks in Singapore and switch between them automatically when one suffers an outage.\nA company that has put this solution into action is Recolte Technology, a Singapore business that provides monitoring and asset-tracking systems. It is using SPTel's multi-network SIMs for its intelligent street lighting and AI-powered road-safety analytics deployments with Felicity Smart Infrastructure and Sing Moh Electrical Engineering.\nPowerAID sensors installed at selected sites continuously collect multimodal real-time traffic movement, energy consumption and street lighting operational data. The data is sent through SPTel's multi-network M2M SIMs to the Felicity Connect platform, where it is used to model how existing street lights could respond to changing traffic conditions and also feeds TrafficAID's AI analysis.\n\"SPTel's multi-network SIM technology provides the communications backbone for the initiative, ensuring that each deployed sensor maintains a continuous connection to the Felicity Connect platform. Unlike conventional single-carrier connectivity, the multi-network capability enables automatic network failover, minimising communication interruptions and preserving the integrity of the data collected,\" says Ong Aidil, executive director of Recolte Technology.\nThe deployment shows why connectivity becomes more consequential when AI moves into physical operations. An AI analytics platform will greatly benefit road conditions or energy monitoring, but it cannot work if the sensors go offline.\nEmpowering real-time decisions\nKeeping the network available is only part of the task. Many enterprise AI applications - such as industrial automation, smart manufacturing, AI-assisted surveillance, traffic management and fraud detection - must also support real-time decision-making.\nTo enable that, SPTel's network reduces the number of intermediate points, or \"hops\", through which data passes between locations. This more direct route enables islandwide latency of less than one millisecond, allowing AI systems to respond in real-time to change events and act faster to improve efficiency, customer experience and safety.\nScaling capacity while managing cyber risk\nNetwork demand rarely stays constant. A retailer or logistics provider may see a spike during a major sale or seasonal rush, while a livestream can push other businesses to need more capacity for only a few hours.\n\"Many businesses are oversizing their network as they worry about congestion when traffic spikes during peak periods. At the other end, businesses that are caught unprepared can face poor network performance when demand rises. These make network capacity planning a challenge during peak periods,\" says Heng Kwee Tong, chief technology officer of SPTel.\nSPTel's Bandwidth on Demand service solves that issue. It lets customers increase their bandwidth in two minutes, for periods as short as one hour and by up to 10 times their usual capacity. The change can be made through a self-service portal and customers pay only for what they use. According to Heng, this differs from other providers, where customers may face a provisioning lead time or have to upgrade their entire plan.\nHe adds: \"For increased visibility and control, we provide end users with a complimentary bandwidth utilisation dashboard.\" The dashboard lets customers track real-time usage and receive alerts when utilisation reaches preset thresholds, giving them a clearer view of their network usage or if they need to scale up before users feel the slowdown.\nThis concept of flexibility extends to SPTel's mobile data solutions as well. SPTel's Multi-Network M2M service pools data across the customer's deployed SIMs rather than assigning a fixed allowance to each device. Capacity left unused by one sensor or terminal can therefore be consumed by another, reducing waste as the fleet grows.\nWhile AI can help businesses automate more work and make faster decisions, connecting it to more data, devices and operational systems also widens the potential attack surface. Cybersecurity is therefore more important, as a successful attack can disrupt an application as well as the services and processes that depend on it.\nOne common threat is a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, which floods a website or system with traffic in an attempt to make it unavailable. Cloudflare reported that such attacks rose 121% in 2025 to 47.1 million, while network-layer attacks more than tripled year on year and accounted for 78% of the total in the fourth quarter. The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore has also warned that attacks affecting local organisations are growing in scale and sophistication.\nFor companies without a dedicated cybersecurity team, the first challenge may be determining whether a disruption is caused by strong customer demand, a network fault or malicious traffic. That uncertainty can delay the appropriate response while the affected service remains unavailable.\nSPTel's clean pipe network can help as it includes DDoS attack detection by default and alerts customers when an attack is underway. \"So, customers will know clearly that the disruption is due to a DDoS attack on their network instead of a connectivity outage. This speeds up their response time and reduces downtime,\" says Heng.\nCustomers can then activate mitigation through SPTel's portal, an option Heng says suits businesses without an existing DDoS mitigation subscription. \"It also allows you to pay only when you are attacked, reducing the need for upfront investment,\" he adds.\nBusinesses that prefer not to manage the process themselves can choose automatic mitigation. The service does not replace broader cybersecurity measures, but it can reduce one form of downtime risk for businesses that need their websites, payments or booking systems to stay reachable.\nBuilding the network behind AI\nAs organisations increasingly adopt AI, more of their operations depend on networks linking cloud systems, data and automated processes. Those tools work only if the connection underneath is reliable, resilient, fast, scalable and secure.\nTo enable AI-driven applications as well as critical business functions, SPTel is offering two Business Broadband plans at promotional rates until Sept 20, 2026.\nThe Business Broadband Plan start from $98 a month on a 24-month contract. It includes a 500 Mbps connection with a complimentary speed boost to 800 Mbps, one static IP address, DDoS attack detection, a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router and a waiver of one-time charges worth $817.50.\nMeanwhile, the Business Broadband with DDoSProtect costs $356 a month on a 24-month contract. It includes eight static IP addresses, a 100 Mbps connection with a complimentary 100 Mbps speed boost, DDoS attack detection and automatic mitigation, an enterprise-grade router with installation, a 99.95% service-level agreement and the same one-time charge waiver.\nSPTel is also offering a Multi-Network M2M SIM bundle at $113 a month, with 5GB of pooled data across 10 SIM cards.\nBusinesses who sign up for any service during the promotional period, with a total contract value of at least $2,000 (including GST), will be eligible for the campaign giveaways.\nThe first 300 redemptions will receive fuel or ride-hailing vouchers worth up to $250.
