Klarna is searching for a new finance chief, as Niclas Neglén plans to step down from the role early next year.

The payments company said Tuesday that Neglén, who has served as CFO for six years, will remain in the role through the planned succession.

David Sandström, Klarna's chief marketing officer, also plans to step down early next year.

The leadership announcement came as Klarna tempered its outlook for the year, even as it swung to a profit and logged higher revenue in the second quarter, sending shares tumbling in premarket trading.

The stock was recently down 18%, to $15.98. Through Monday's close, shares have lost nearly a third of their value year to date.

Klarna said it now expects gross merchandise volume, which measures the total monetary value of all completed purchases over its network, to come in between $149 billion and $151 billion for the year, compared with a prior outlook for greater than $155 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet were looking for GMV of $155.68 billion.

The company attributed the lower outlook to a roughly $600 million impact from currency translations, as well as a more measured view of German volumes.

For its three months ended June 30, Klarna posted a profit of $9 million, compared with a loss of $53 million a year earlier. On a per-share basis, quarterly earnings of 1 cent came in ahead of analyst expectations for a quarterly loss of 5 cents.

Total revenue jumped 27% to $1.04 billion and came in ahead of Wall Street models for $996.5 million. GMV rose 18% to $36.65 billion. Analysts were looking for $36.42 billion.

Klarna ended the quarter with about 120 million active customers, up about 8% from a year earlier. The company's merchant network also continued to expand, surging 54% from last year to about 1.21 million.

Chief Executive Sebastian Siemiatkowski said as Klarna's active customer base grows, each is using the platform for more of their everyday spend, with revenue per active customer up 24% during the recent quarter.

Deepening engagement also provided a boost to transaction margin dollars, he added.

For the current quarter, Klarna guided for revenue of $940 million to $980 million, missing Wall Street models for $1.11 billion.
