China Shares Mixed as Steel Output, Investments Slump; Shanghai Precilasers Surges 516%

Chinese equities finished mixed on Tuesday as investors weighed disappointing macroeconomic data, including a decline in steel production and a deeper-than-expected contraction in fixed asset investment.

The Shanghai Composite Index, the main gauge of Chinese stocks, closed 0.2% higher to 3,930.30. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.6% to 14,622.50.

China's production of steel fell in July, with crude steel output falling 3.6% year on year to 76.9 million tons, amid weak demand and a slowdown in the construction industry.

Meanwhile, fixed asset investment contracted 6.7% year over year in the first seven months of 2026. The reading was worse than the 5.7% contraction pace recorded in the prior period and missed the consensus forecast of a 6.2% contraction tracked by Investing.com.

In company news, Shanghai Precilasers (SHA:688826) shares closed at 1,152.00 yuan apiece on their first day of trading on the Shanghai bourse. This marked a 516% jump from the laser manufacturer's initial public offering price of 186.88 yuan.
