Calian Group 3Q Profit, Revenue Rise on Defense, Space Demand

Calian Group posted higher profit in its third quarter, benefiting from strong demand for space and defense offerings which drove revenue higher.

For the three months ended June 30, the mission-critical solutions company on Thursday reported a rise in net income to 5.94 million Canadian dollars ($4.2 million), or C$0.51 a share, up from C$590,000, or C$0.05 a share, in the comparable quarter a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were C$1.10 a share. According to FactSet, analysts were expecting C$0.82 a share.

Calian, which focuses on defense, space, healthcare and other strategic critical infrastructure sectors, generated 20% higher revenue, reaching C$230.4 million, topping analyst forecasts for a more modest rise to C$215.4 million.

Chief Executive Patrick Houston said that the revenue growth was underpinned primarily by strong and sustained demand for its space and defense offerings.

In late June, Calian agreed to acquire satellite and remote connectivity firm Galaxy Broadband for up to C$51.5 million to strengthen its space communications capabilities. The deal is set to close in the fourth quarter.
