Alternative markets to exports to the US, including Brazil’s own domestic market, have shown “different standards and requirements that we had not all been concerned about before,” he said.\nIn addition to the need for certification and traceability across the entire supply chain, Francisco Braido said the company “took advantage of the moment to structure and understand what makes the most logistical and economic sense,” stressing that the strategic plan for alternative routes does not mean an immediate reshuffling of flows, but targets the medium term.\n“Until 2029, I see demand for feedstock, both domestic and external, remaining stable. From then on, it could jump,” he said.\nBraido said there is currently major difficulty in pricing Brazilian tallow in the US, while Martella said that “at current levels, the US remains attractive, especially because of the flexibility in the technical specification” of the product demanded.\n“In Brazil, not everyone is able to work with tallow at 10% or 15% FFA,” Martella said.\nEven so, Martella expects demand for tallow in Brazil’s domestic market to “gain traction and recover from now until the end of the year.”\nRegardless of the destination, Braido stressed that suppliers should seek the best conditions for their business, whether in the local market, the US or Europe.\nHe noted that the escalation in fuel prices amid the war between the US and Iran means that, even with the 37.5% tariff, the arbitrage for Brazilian tallow into the US remains open, “unlike what happened last year,” when the Trump Administration imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian products and “the strong domestic market here was the salvation of tallow producers.”\nMartella said the sector was “lucky” because the mandate requiring a 15% biodiesel blend in diesel, known as B15, came into force at the same time as the 2025 tariff increase.\n“On the other hand, this year the domestic market is going through a very challenging moment. Today, the technical specification is a limiting factor for consumption growth in the local market. But actions are being taken in this regard, and we expect a slight improvement toward the end of the year, which could create good opportunities in the local market,” he said.\nExports to Europe\nBraido added that Brazil’s biodiesel sector is generally able to absorb tallow supply, while the US has a technological advantage when it comes to higher FFA materials.\n“Other external markets face the same limitation as Brazil,” he said.\nThe European market has the potential to become a more consistent consumer of Brazilian tallow in the future, with biofuels regulations and policies that are “more stable” compared with the US. Europe is also “protectionist toward virgin vegetable oils, which could favor Chinese UCO and South American or Oceanian tallow in the renewables segment.”\nHe stressed, however, that the Brazil-Europe route is still new, having been developed over the past year, and is not currently a technically viable option at the scale Brazilian tallow is accustomed to shipping to the US.\nOther destinations\nMartella said consumers in Asia, such as Singapore and China, have potential, but also face technical and logistical restrictions. Braido noted that China is testing aviation fuels and that, if it adopts the same technologies used in the US, it could trigger “a global reshaping of trade flows in the feedstock market.”\n“These are good news stories for the medium and long term.
