Samsung Electronics (KRX:005930) is working with the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop heat pump technology that can provide efficient and stable heating in temperatures below minus 30 degrees Celsius, the electronics products maker said in a Sunday release.

The South Korean firm plans to carry out the research work until the first half of 2027, verify the performance and reliability of the technology in the extreme environment of Fairbanks, Alaska, and apply it to several heat pump heating, ventilation, and air conditioning products, the release said.

Temperatures in Fairbanks can go down to monthly averages of around minus 40 degrees Celsius and historical lows of minus 50 degrees Celsius or even lower.
