It also cited carrier-imposed surcharges among the measures taken to mitigate higher fuel costs, although the increase in fuel prices and other operating costs nevertheless weighed on earnings.\n\nThe unit cost guidance excludes EU ETS costs\nThe growing EU ETS bill also contrasts with one of the airline’s key financial performance metrics. Air France-KLM’s guidance for unit costs, as well as its reported unit-cost performance, is presented at constant fuel prices, constant exchange rates and excluding EU ETS costs, meaning the group’s headline efficiency measure does not capture the carbon compliance expenses highlighted elsewhere in its results.\n\nNew-generation aircraft reached 38% of the Air France-KLM fleet\nAt the same time, the airline said fleet renewal remains the cornerstone of its decarbonization strategy.\nBy the end of June 2026, 38% of the group’s fleet consisted of new-generation aircraft, up from 30% a year earlier. According to Air France-KLM, the aircraft consume up to 25% less fuel per passenger kilometer and generate up to 63% less noise than the models they replace. The group maintained its target of having up to 80% of its fleet made up of new-generation aircraft by 2030.\nAir France-KLM also reported a 1.2% year-on-year reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity, to 905 gCO2e per revenue tonne kilometer (RTK) under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) methodology. The company noted that the prior-year comparison had been restated to reflect recommendations under the SBTi standard.\n\nAir France-KLM reiterates its position on EU climate rules\nAlongside the results, Air France-KLM reiterated its long-standing position on European aviation climate policy.\nThe company said it continues to engage with policymakers on “decarbonization and regulatory reform” to address what it described as competitive distortions arising from the EU ETS and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) mandates, arguing that the measures place European airlines at a structural disadvantage compared with international competitors. The comments formed part of the group’s sustainability update, which referenced discussions held during the Paris Air Forum in June 2026.\nLooking ahead, Air France-KLM said it expects to continue operating in a “highly volatile environment” while maintaining an agile approach to capacity planning.
