Sterling Could Underperform if BOE Remains Cautious over Raising Rates

1459 GMT - Sterling could underperform as most Bank of England policymakers remain reluctant to raise interest rates, HSBC strategist say in a note. The BOE voted 6-3 to leave rates unchanged Thursday. A minority of policymakers warn of second-round inflation effects but the broader committee looks hesitant to tighten policy while the underlying economy is weak and policy is already restrictive, he says. "The BOE still sees the growth downside as the more immediate risk, and the inflation upside as potentially temporary." If the BOE stays sidelined while external shocks and domestic policy uncertainty persist, sterling looks vulnerable, particularly against currencies with firmer rate or growth support, he says The euro rises to a four-week high of 0.8586 pounds, LSEG data show.
