Brown & Brown reported a higher second-quarter profit, driven by growth in commission and fees revenue.

Stripping out certain one-time items, the company reported adjusted earnings of $1.07 a share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $1.08 a share.

Revenue rose to $1.68 billion from $1.29 billion. Analysts were expecting $1.71 billion in revenue.

Shares fell 5.3% to $66.00 in after-hours trading. The stock closed up 3% to $69.70, down 13% year-to-date.

Most of the company's topline came from commission and fees revenue, which rose to $1.65 billion from $1.25 billion. Investment revenue and income from other sources fell to $22 million from $36 million.

"We are pleased with our financial results for the quarter and have great momentum as we head into the back half of the year," Chief Executive Officer J. Powell Brown said.
