Tenet Healthcare Shares Climb on 2Q Earnings Beat, Outlook Lift

Shares of Tenet Healthcare climbed after the company reported second-quarter earnings that exceeded Wall Street expectations and lifted its outlook for the rest of the year.

Shares were up 13% to $224.00 in after-hours trading on Thursday. The stock closed up 1.9% at $199.02, roughly flat for the year.

The company said it now expects full-year adjusted earnings between $20.30 and $21.69 a share on net operating revenue between $21.9 billion and $22.5 billion.

Tenet had previously projected adjusted earnings in a range of $16.38 to $18.68 a share on revenue between $21.5 billion and $22.3 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet currently expect $17.94 a share in adjusted earnings on $21.97 billion in revenue.

The company on Thursday reported a second-quarter profit of $826 million, or $9.84 a share, compared with a profit of $288 million, or $3.14 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted earnings were $6.12 a share. Analysts were expecting $4.26 a share.

Operating revenue rose 6.8% to $5.63 billion,beating analyst expectations of $5.43 billion in revenue. The company also separately reported $413 million in revenue from contract terminations.
