Lower U.K. Food Inflation Should Reassure BOE Ahead of Meeting

1256 GMT - Far lower food prices than the Bank of England expected should help relieve policymakers' fears about increases in salient prices fueling inflation expectations, Berenberg's Andrew Wishart. Headline inflation fell to 2.8% in July from 2.6%, a third consecutive downside surprise, as food, alcohol and tobacco price rises slowed from over 4% in 2025 to 1.7%. Alongside the slowdown in services inflation, that rules out an interest-rate hike at next week's BOE meeting, he says. If a sustained increase in oil prices can be avoided and the new Andy Burnham government keeps fiscal consolidation on course at its first budget this fall, the BOE can avoid a hike altogether and resume rate cuts in December, Wishart says.
