AstraZeneca is scheduled to report results for the second quarter on Monday. Here is what you need to know.
REVENUE FORECAST: The U.K. drugmaker is expected to report total revenue of $15.42 billion for the second quarter, according to consensus estimates compiled by Visible Alpha. For the same quarter last year, it reported total revenue of $14.46 billion.
CORE EARNINGS FORECAST: Analysts expect AstraZeneca to make core earnings per share of $2.48, according to the same consensus. The company posted core EPS of $2.17 for last year's second quarter.
Shares in AstraZeneca fell 4% during the second quarter, and deepened their losses in July after the company said its Wainua drug failed to reduce deaths from a heart condition in a late-stage clinical trial. Since the start of the year through Thursday's close, the stock dropped 8%.
WHAT TO WATCH
--DRUG PIPELINE: AstraZeneca's trial miss means all eyes are on the company's upcoming updates on pivotal studies, particularly one due in coming weeks that tests a combination of its Datroway and Imfinzi drugs in lung cancer, analysts at Jefferies wrote in a note to clients. "The blue-sky scenario would include a meaningful revenue opportunity for Imfinzi," they added. Any update on another late-stage trial for its Etcamah drug in a type of breast cancer will be in focus, but the failure of a similar Roche study earlier this year might make investors more cautious, analysts at Bank of America said. Bernstein analysts said AstraZeneca retains the deepest pipeline in the industry.
--GUIDANCE: The company expects total revenue to increase by a figure in the mid to high single-digit percentage range, with core EPS rising by a low double digit. Analysts at UBS said they don't see scope for AstraZeneca to raise its 2026 guidance. The Wainua miss might make investors wonder whether AstraZeneca can still achieve its 2030 target of $80 billion in revenue, according to UBS. The UBS analysts said they see the goal as achievable.
