Movie-theater Chains Get Downgrade on Soft Slate of 3Q Films

1515 ET - Wells Fargo analysts say they are moving to the sidelines on Cinemark Holdings and IMAX, citing a meaningfully softer set of film releases in the current quarter than they previously forecast. The analysts point to three films in particular. Supergirl has limited momentum with a disappointing opening in the second quarter, hurting its carryover benefit into the current quarter, they say, while Minions & Monsters is seeing softer-than-expected domestic results, tracking toward less than half the domestic box office sales the analysts previously estimated. Moana also had a disappointing opening weekend. "The main takeaway is not that the 2026 box office outlook has meaningfully deteriorated," they add, noting the fourth quarter "still carries a strong slate and remains the key swing factor to the full-year outlook."
