Astrazeneca Non-oncology Trial Failure is Unexpected

0754 GMT - AstraZeneca's negative headline results for its Wainua drug trial are unexpected, analysts at Bernstein say in a note. The U.K. drugmaker said the trial evaluating Wainua for transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy, a rare heart disease, didn't meet its primary objective. "We've just spoken to AZN who are extremely and disappointed surprised by this news," the analysts say. "We are too." The company recently doubled the trial size to 1,400 patients to increase the chances of positive, statistically rigorous results on the primary endpoint in the total population, Bernstein says. Shares fall 8.9%. (andrea.figueras@wsj.com)
