MapLight Therapeutics said its autism drug failed to meet its primary goal but showed a strong signal in reducing irritability certain adolescents.
The clinical-stage biopharmaceutical said Monday that the mid-stage study of its autism drug ML-004 failed to show an improvement in social communication, the main goal of the trial.
The company noted that an approved pharmacologic therapy for social communication currently doesn't exist.
However, MapLight reported that the therapy showed positive effects on irritability in adolescents with more severe baseline symptoms, a domain with an established regulatory path and limited treatment options.
MapLight said it plans to meet with the Food and Drug Administration to discuss next steps and said it remains well funded ahead of a separate phase 2 readout in schizophrenia expected later in August.
