The U.K.'s competition regulator said it is assessing whether Paramount Skydance's $81 billion bid for Warner Bros. Discovery could lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the country.

The Competition and Markets Authority said Tuesday that it has launched the first phase of its merger review and notified the parties involved. The regulator has until Aug. 7 to decide whether to open a more in-depth phase 2 investigation into the deal.

Earlier this month, the European Union started its formal antitrust review of the takeover, setting a July 7 deadline to complete its initial screening of the deal.
