Shares of Dollar General rose Tuesday after the discount retailer reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings and raised its guidance for the fiscal year.

Dollar General reported earnings of $2 a share in its fiscal first quarter, up from $1.78 last year and above analysts' consensus estimates of $1.89, according to FactSet. Revenue totaled $10.79 billion, just short of Wall Street's call of $10.82 billion. Same-store sales rose 2% year over year.

Dollar General stock jumped 4.3% in premarket trading Tuesday. Shares have tumbled 17% in 2026 after a blockbuster 2025 sent expectations higher to start the year.

The company now expects earnings per share of $7.20 to $7.45 for the fiscal year, up 10 cents from its previous estimate. It reiterated guidance for same-store sales growth of 2.2% to 2.7%.

Dollar General's solid earnings report comes on the heels of Dollar Tree's similarly strong print last week. Dollar stores have been a rare bright spot this earnings season among companies that cater to lower-income consumers as higher energy prices strain their wallets.

"We believe the essential nature of our offering and our expansive footprint position us well to navigate the current macroeconomic environment," Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos said in a statement.

Dollar Tree stock was up 0.6% on Tuesday. Five Below, which reports quarterly results Wednesday, rose 0.5%.
