IMAX shares rose after The Wall Street Journal reported the company was exploring a sale.

The stock surged 14% to $38.69 in after-hours trading Thursday.

IMAX has approached other entertainment companies as potential buyers and the sale process is still in the early stages, The Journal reported, citing people familiar with the situation.

The sale talks come as premium theater experiences are growing faster than the overall box office. IMAX, which is known for its big-screen experiences, accounted for more than 5% of box office sales last year, up from 3.2% in 2019.

IMAX has a market capitalization of about $1.85 billion. Through Thursday's close, its stock was down 8% this year.
