JD.com Could Face Challenges in Sustaining Growth Momentum -- Market Talk

0349 GMT - JD.com could face challenges in sustaining its growth momentum over the next couple of quarters, says S&P Global Ratings in a report. The Chinese online retailer's core retail business gained in 1Q on a larger customer base and higher shopping frequency, with overall results beating S&P's expectations. However, JD.com's plan to cut back on promotions could cause retail growth to moderate as user growth is likely to slow, the S&P analysts say. Competition in the Chinese food-delivery sector could also intensify again in the upcoming peak season, they add. The retailer may have to be more targeted with its food delivery promotions to control any losses stemming from this situation, S&P says. Shares fall 1.4% to HK$126.10. (megan.cheah@wsj.com)
