U.N. Pins Hopes on Washington Talks to End Lebanon Fighting -- WSJ

The United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Lebanon said Friday that continuing diplomatic efforts offered a "critical opportunity" to halt the violence.

"The people of Lebanon urgently need security, stability and the chance to recover, not renewed pain, displacement and suffering," Imran Riza said.

Riza said he hoped current talks taking place in Washington, D.C., between the Israeli and Lebanese governments would pave the way for a political solution.

"Over the past weeks, civilians in Lebanon have continued to face an increasingly devastating toll from Israeli airstrikes, despite the cease-fire announced on April 17," he added.

The Lebanese Health Ministry said Friday that the death toll had risen to 2,951 killed and 8,988 injured since March 2. The ministry doesn't distinguish between civilians and combatants. On Thursday, the Israeli military said it continued its operations in southern Lebanon to eliminate threats against Israeli civilians.
