Modern Wealth, a registered investment advisory firm with an aggressive acquisition strategy, announced Wednesday that it acquired Brown and Company, a wealth manager with $1 billion in assets based in Denver. The deal, Modern Wealth's 21st since its launch, pushes its assets under management to more than $13 billion.

The deal is Modern Wealth's second this month and its first in Colorado. The RIA now has 20 client-facing offices. It was launched three years ago by former United Capital and Goldman Sachs executives with private-equity backing.

Earlier in April, Modern Wealth acquired Florida RIA Legacy Wealth Management, which had $1.2 billion in client assets. Legacy, like Brown, was formerly affiliated with LPL Financial. A representative for LPL wasn't immediately available to comment on Brown and Company's move.

Brown and Company serves more than 200 households and aims for a family office style experience. Clients include entrepreneurs, executives, and wealthy individuals. The firm was founded in 1988 by Mark Brown, and includes leaders Danielle Berz, Justin Cassida, and Jonathan Kuiter.

"As we considered the future of the firm, it was important to find the right home for our team -- one that would support a thoughtful succession plan, preserve the best elements of our firm, and help us elevate our capabilities," says Brown, who is now a Modern Wealth managing director. "Modern Wealth stood out for its culture, capabilities and long-term vision."

Jason Gordo, president and a co-founder of Modern Wealth, says the new team is "well positioned to accelerate growth and expand the depth of services they deliver to clients." For Modern Wealth, he says Denver is an important market that "that strengthens our position in the West and marks an important step in our expansion into Colorado."

The deal, which was announced Wednesday, closed April 17.
