Ulta Focuses on Offering Earlier-Stage, Indie Brands -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1441 ET - Ulta Beauty is doubling down on earlier-stage and indie brands as part of its focus on providing more new products, Raymond James analysts say in a note after meeting with management. The shift should boost Ulta's lineup of differentiated and exclusive products, and better position it as a launch partner for brands, rather than as a channel for them to scale, the analysts say. The focus on newer brands may come at a detriment to larger brands if they fall behind on offering new or exclusive products, the analysts say. The shift is one of several underway at Ulta that the analysts see improving the company's growth perspectives and competitive positioning, they say. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
