Albertsons Swings to 4Q Loss on Charge From Opioid Settlement

Albertsons swung to a fourth-quarter loss fueled by a charge from a new opioid settlement set to resolve substantially all opioid-related claims brought against the company.

The company reported a loss of $480.8 million, or 94 cents a share, compared with a profit of $171.8 million, or 29 cents a share, the year prior.

The loss included a $600 million charge related to the opioid settlement framework. On Tuesday, the company said it reached a $774 million settlement to resolve opioid-related claims brought against the company nationally.

The company has faced lawsuits accusing its pharmacy of allegedly failing to prevent the overuse of opioids.

The payments will be made over the course of nine years.

For the fourth quarter, adjusted earnings were 48 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 44 cents a share.

Net sales and other revenue rose to $20.25 billion from $18.8 billion. Wall Street expected $20.47 billion.

Identical sales rose 0.7%. Analysts forecast 1.7%.

The company guided for fiscal 2026 identical sales of flat to up 1% and adjusted earnings of $2.22 to $2.32 a share. Analysts see fiscal-year identical sales growth of 1.2% and adjusted earnings of $2.27 a share.
