Top Republicans in Congress have remained silent on President Trump's threat to wipe out Iran's civilization unless a deal is reached. The offices of Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R., S.D.) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) didn't respond to requests for comment by email or phone on Tuesday and haven't made public comments on the matter.

Congress is out of session during a two-week holiday recess, and most lawmakers aren't in Washington. Democratic leaders have called for Congress to go back into session to consider limits to Trump's war powers, while dozens of rank-and-file Democratic lawmakers called Tuesday for his removal from office.
