The summer season in Shanghai is being transformed into a one-stop destination for family fun, offering a diverse array of experiences for all ages. Yesterday marked the grand opening of the "Up Down Left Right · Sports Park" in Jing'an's Zhangyuan, turning the usually tranquil and elegant historic district into a vibrant, inclusive urban "sports showcase." The sounds of children's laughter and the crisp impact of balls now echo through the Shikumen alleyways. Light sports activities like fun football, street basketball, and floor curling are set up along the pathways. This initiative of moving sports scenes into a historical neighborhood, with its low barrier to entry and appeal for the whole family, perfectly aligns with the demand for family outings during the summer holidays, unleashing the season's full vitality.
The 2026 "Shanghai Summer" International Consumption Season officially launched the night before last. Coinciding with the first weekend of the school holidays, a media tour visited three core activity landmarks: Jing'an Zhangyuan, the West Bund Dream Center, and the Bund's BFC, offering a firsthand look at this city-wide consumption festival spanning July to October, with "family consumption" as its central theme.
Historic Shikumen District Transformed into Playground
By 9 a.m., Jing'an Zhangyuan was already bustling with activity. On Maoming North Road, the originally quiet pedestrian street has been transformed into a brightly colored "Up Down Sports Street," with cheers from children ringing out from the football shooting experience area.
This is the site of the "Up Down Left Right · Sports Park," an official supporting event of the 2026 "Shanghai Summer." As the opening act of this consumption season, this sports carnival, running until July 19, deeply embeds diverse sports forms like football, tennis, badminton, basketball, and floor curling into the public spaces of the pedestrian street through playful adaptations and contextual integration. It is understood that from July 4th to 19th, different themed activities are scheduled each weekend to continuously enrich the experience for citizens and tourists.
"I used to come running near Zhangyuan when I lived in Shanghai. Today, I discovered many new special activities, and the experience is great," said Yurika from Mexico, browsing for World Cup commemorative jerseys at the FIFA official licensed merchandise area on Maoming North Road pedestrian street. She is visiting Shanghai with friends who are in China for the first time. "Payment is also much more convenient than before. Many small shops accept foreign cards directly, which is very friendly for tourists."
The "Summer Shops" within Zhangyuan also exude a family-friendly atmosphere. Over ten types of Shanghai summer-limited cultural and creative products are on display, each incorporating elements of Shanghai's urban memories and summer lifestyle scenes. The on-site "MEET CHINA Inbound Tourism Digital Consumption Screen" supports 10 languages, enabling a one-stop process of browsing, selecting, paying, and picking up goods.
Popular IPs Intertwined with Light and Shadow
If Zhangyuan focuses on sporting vitality, the West Bund Dream Center leverages an IP matrix and a light-and-shadow spectacle to create a summer destination for families along the waterfront.
Strolling along the 5-kilometer shoreline of Xuhui's West Bund, an 8-meter-tall "Pilot Mickey" inflatable figure stands atop a dock warehouse, particularly eye-catching. The Disney China "Mickey's Wonderful Journey" themed pop-up has transformed the dock space into immersive scenes like a "departure hall" and "boarding gate," featuring Mickey-themed merchandise from brands like Miniso and TOP TOY. On-site observations reveal many families with children coming specifically to shop.
The activity will run until August 2nd, with a "Mickey's Wonderful Journey" themed bus operating on weekends, shuttling visitors along the waterfront, connecting cultural tourism, commerce, and art experiences.
Not far away, on the silo structure of the West Bund Dream Center, three giant Minions, looking adorably goofy, attract passing children who stop to take photos. The "Minions and the Big Monster" themed installation brings a movie set to life, with various film-themed interactive scenes inside the exhibition area. The appearance of Minion mascots for interactions sparked a wave of photo opportunities.
The 39-day "Love Shanghai MovieLand · GATE M Film Festival," screening over 50 high-quality films across three commercial landmarks—the West Bund Dream Center, West Bund Phoenix Nest, and the new Pudong Jiahui Center—constructs a triple narrative of "water, land, and fantasy" through light and shadow. Yang Yang, Marketing Manager of the West Bund Dream Center, explained that this film festival emphasizes "ticket stub economics," partnering with over 100 dining merchants across the three commercial spaces. Audiences can enjoy exclusive consumption discounts by presenting their ticket stubs, effectively converting viewing traffic into increased consumption.
Charming Scenes Full of Surprises
Thirty-two Butter Bear installations are scattered throughout the Bund BFC (Bank First National Corporation) district, in elevator halls, and on the fifth-floor rooftop terrace. Their soft, cute forms create a charming contrast with the Lujiazui skyline.
"The Butter Bear is so therapeutic. From the entrance of the Bund BFC mall to the elevators and the rooftop terrace, every corner is a delightful surprise, like stepping into a real Butter Bear dream," Ms. Li, who flew to Shanghai specifically from Wuhan, told reporters. She and her friends have followed the Butter Bear to places like Beijing and Malaysia and have even attended related concerts. This time, they planned a two-day stay in Shanghai specifically to attend the "fan meet-and-greet" on July 5th.
It is reported that this Butter Bear pop-up store is the first baking-themed pop-up in China, launching 50 new types of merchandise for the first time. From July 4th to 12th, spanning two consecutive weekends, the "Butter Bear × Bund Dessert Market" will open temporarily, gathering over 50 domestic and international dessert brands and featuring a special "Butter Bear Theme Zone" to create an immersive IP-themed market. Two additional "fan meet-and-greet" sessions are scheduled for July 31st and August 1st. The fact that many Thai fans have also made special trips to Shanghai for the event highlights the international appeal of such IP activities.
It is understood that the rebound in inbound consumption is a significant highlight of this consumption season. According to Visa statistics, for the first quarter of 2026, the transaction value for offline Visa cardholder spending by inbound visitors in Shanghai increased by over 50% year-on-year, with the number of transactions growing by over 60%.
From a sports carnival nestled within century-old Shikumen, to light-and-shadow and IP spectacles along the Huangpu River waterfront, and whimsical wonderlands beneath the Bund skyline, a new summer consumption landscape is unfolding in Shanghai, this international consumption hub. This landscape deeply integrates culture, commerce, tourism, sports, and exhibitions, catering to families across all age groups.
