The investment firm, which oversees roughly $130 billion in assets, has refreshed its confidential IPO filing with U.S. regulators, marking a renewed push toward going public nearly three years after its initial submission, according to people familiar with the matter.
New York-based General Atlantic recently updated its registration documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission, a standard step ahead of a potential share sale. The move positions the firm to complete a listing this year, though the timeline remains contingent on market conditions and is far from guaranteed, the people said.
With a portfolio that includes stakes in Anthropic and Vuori, the growth-focused investor also runs credit, climate, and infrastructure strategies under Chairman and CEO Bill Ford. The firm first filed confidentially for a U.S. IPO in December 2023 but did not proceed at that time.
After a sluggish stretch, the IPO market is regaining momentum, fueled by demand in sectors like artificial intelligence, aerospace, and defense. TPG stands as a recent notable listing among large investment firms, debuting on U.S. exchanges in 2022 with a valuation exceeding $10 billion and over $100 billion in assets under management at the time. Blackstone, Apollo Global Management, KKR, and The Carlyle Group have all completed public listings. Internationally, CVC Capital listed on Euronext Amsterdam in 2024.
This year, shares of several major private equity firms have come under pressure as investors weigh divergent views on their private credit operations. Separately, General Atlantic has teamed up with several Wall Street institutions to market AI tools from Anthropic to corporations, including those backed by private equity firms.
