YZJ Shipbuilding Delivers 83,300 DWT Combination Carrier to Norwegian Owner

YZJ Shipbldg SGD has completed the delivery of the 83,300 deadweight tonnage combination carrier "BALTAZAR" to Norwegian shipowner KLAVENESS, a vessel built at its Jiangsu New YZJ Shipbuilding subsidiary.

This marks the final vessel in a three-ship series of 83,300 DWT combination carriers ordered by KLAVENESS, and it stands out as the first in the series to feature the eSail suction sail wind-assisted propulsion system.

Unlike conventional hollow wind tower designs, the eSail system incorporates a high-lift rigid wing structure with an integrated fan system. The wing generates thrust through active airflow control, drawing in air and accelerating it across the wing surface. By leveraging the Coanda effect to keep airflow tightly attached, the system produces lift and thrust six to seven times greater than traditional sails of equivalent size.

The unit has a robust airfoil-shaped appearance rather than a cylindrical wind tower, with automatic rotation, flap adjustment, and suction intensity control functions. An autonomous control system optimizes the sail's attitude based on real-time wind conditions. The technology has received DNV type approval and ABS thrust algorithm certification, with projected fuel consumption reductions of 10% to 30% for the vessel.

As a third-generation CABU (combination carrier for liquid and bulk cargo) green vessel, "BALTAZAR" retains the series' core advantage of carrying multiple cargo types. Its main and auxiliary engines both meet Tier III emission standards, and the ship is equipped with air lubrication systems. Additionally, the vessel is designed with retrofit-ready conditions for methanol and LNG fuel conversion, providing upgrade flexibility for long-term operations.
