On August 14th, in Jilin City, dozens of residents in the Tiansheng community activity center of Wenchang Street gathered around long tables, polishing and assembling carbon fiber sheets the size of a palm. After completion, they inspected each other's work before submitting it to on-site verification personnel for final quality checks.
The carbon fiber semi-finished products completed by hand are returned to partner companies, where they undergo multiple processing steps before being assembled into drones sold nationwide. As China's manufacturing and technology sectors continue to upgrade, the division of labor in the industry chain is becoming increasingly refined.
The rapid development of emerging industries such as the low-altitude economy, new materials, and artificial intelligence has pushed a number of simple manual processes with low operational thresholds from factories down to communities, making it convenient for middle-aged and elderly residents to participate in high-tech industry supporting processing locally.
Fan Chen, secretary of the Tiansheng community Party committee, explained that the jurisdiction has a permanent resident population of over 10,000. Since last year, the community has partnered with several companies to launch a drone propeller sub-processing project. The companies supply raw materials uniformly and establish standardized processing guidelines, while residents complete the manual steps in the community activity room.
"Residents are very willing to participate in this kind of manual work supporting high-tech industries," Fan Chen said. He noted that relevant skills training has attracted over 400 participants, driven more than 100 residents to find work nearby, and the cumulative processing output value of the project has exceeded 1.2 million yuan.
Drone propellers have strict requirements for processing precision and material standards. The community's manual processing relies on the foundation of Jilin's locally mature carbon fiber composite material industry. Company technicians regularly visit the community to teach, standardizing processing methods and strictly controlling the pass rate of finished products.
At the processing site, residents exchange polishing techniques and conduct cross-checks. Yang Hongmei, a 56-year-old resident, explained that the team's product pass rate has risen from 92% to 98%, successfully securing long-term orders from the company.
According to reports from relevant departments in Jilin City, in addition to drone parts processing, the local community's "home workshop" also undertakes sub-processing for product packaging. Other specialty handicraft projects, such as weaving, baseball stitching, and intangible cultural heritage paper-cutting, have also been launched.
The community has also partnered with digital technology companies to introduce lightweight digital employment positions, including AI data annotation, voice transcription, and text proofreading. After short-term training, residents can complete image, voice, and text classification annotations on a computer, providing basic data for artificial intelligence model training.
From manual processing supporting high-tech manufacturing to digital light employment at home, various industry support positions continue to sink into communities. Yang Hongmei admitted that she will keep learning new knowledge to keep pace with the development of the digital industry.
