Direxion Daily Semiconductors Bull 3x Shares (SOXL) plummeted 12.06% during intraday trading on Wednesday, as the leveraged ETF sharply amplified losses from a broad-based rout in the global semiconductor sector. The 3x leveraged bull fund, which tracks the 30 largest U.S.-listed semiconductor companies, faced intense selling pressure as the underlying Philadelphia Semiconductor Index tumbled to its lowest levels in over two months.

The sell-off was driven by escalating skepticism over the sustainability of AI capital expenditure. Reports that NVIDIA was planning to provide approximately $250 billion in financing guarantees for OpenAI to lease large-scale data centers reignited fears of a circular financing model underpinning massive AI infrastructure investments. Market participants grew increasingly concerned about the uncertain return timeline for these enormous outlays, with NVIDIA shares falling nearly 5% and AMD dropping approximately 8%.

Adding to the negative sentiment, growing competitive threats from China further weighed on the sector. The explosive trading debut of Chinese memory chip maker CXMT and reports of significant Chinese progress in producing deep ultraviolet lithography machines stoked fears of increased competition for established semiconductor players. Even NXP Semiconductors, which reported better-than-expected quarterly results and issued above-consensus guidance, fell over 4% in after-hours trading, underscoring the severity of the sector-wide selling pressure. As a leveraged ETF, SOXL's decline was significantly magnified relative to the underlying index movement.
