Germany's Federal Statistical Office announced on October 8 that, after calendar and seasonal adjustments, the country's goods exports fell 0.8% month-on-month in August to 137.6 billion euros, marking a second consecutive monthly decline, while imports rose 0.9% month-on-month to 118.1 billion euros.

The trade surplus narrowed from 21.6 billion euros in July to 19.5 billion euros, a reduction of 2.1 billion euros.

Exports to the United States declined, while performance across European markets was mixed. The United States remained Germany's largest single export market in August, but German exports to the US fell 6.3% month-on-month to 13.5 billion euros. Over the same period, exports to the United Kingdom rose 16.7% to 7.9 billion euros.

Divergence also emerged within European markets. German exports to EU member states declined 0.6% month-on-month to 77.5 billion euros, with exports to eurozone countries rising 0.8% to 54.3 billion euros, while exports to EU countries outside the eurozone fell 3.5% to 23.2 billion euros. Exports to markets outside the EU fell 1.1% in total to 60 billion euros.

On the import side, German imports from EU member states declined 0.4% month-on-month to 59.3 billion euros, while imports from markets outside the EU rose 2.2% to 58.8 billion euros. The combination of falling exports and rising imports drove the narrowing of the monthly trade surplus.

Over a longer time frame, German exports remain above year-earlier levels. After calendar and seasonal adjustments, August exports rose 6.2% year-on-year; cumulative exports from January to August of this year totaled 1.0927 trillion euros, up 4.4% year-on-year. In the latest data, the July month-on-month export decline was revised from the initially reported 0.8% to 0.5%.

Car export volumes fell, while industrial production rebounded, mainly driven by the construction sector. Data previously released by the German Association of the Automotive Industry showed that Germany's passenger car exports in August totaled 168,300 units, down 12% year-on-year; cumulative exports in the first eight months of this year were about 2.01 million units, down 5% year-on-year. Over the same period, overseas orders for automakers fell 13% year-on-year. These auto figures, measured by vehicle units, provide an industry-level perspective beyond overall goods export values.

In August, Germany's domestic passenger car production fell 4% year-on-year to 229,900 units. The association said part of the output reduction was related to changes in factory holiday schedules, with shutdowns and leave this year more concentrated in August.

Separate data released by Germany's Federal Statistical Office on October 7 showed that, after price, calendar, and seasonal adjustments, industrial production rose 2.0% month-on-month in August, with construction output up 9.3%, machinery and equipment manufacturing output up 5.3%, and automotive industry output down 5.4%. Excluding energy and construction, industrial production rose 0.6% month-on-month.
