During a media event showcasing Meituan's "low-altitude logistics network," Mao Yinian, Vice President of Meituan and head of its drone business, discussed the unit's commercial objectives. He stated that the ultimate goal is to achieve profitability at scale and, crucially, to sustain that profitability over the long term. Mao acknowledged that there is no strict timeline for reaching this target, emphasizing that progress hinges primarily on technological maturity. Mao Yinian estimates that it will take approximately two to three years for Meituan's drone operations to achieve initial profitability on a certain scale. He suggested that the first profitable application might not be the highly competitive domestic food delivery market but could instead be found in other specialized sectors. He revealed that operations in the medical logistics sector have already begun to generate gross profit but have not yet reached the level of scaled profitability. Moving forward, Meituan plans to identify and develop more scenarios that can yield gross profit and are scalable, aiming to steer the overall business toward sustainable profitability.
