Legendary Investor Druckenmiller's Surprising Critique of Bessent, Crafted with AI Assistance

Wall Street was taken aback on Monday when Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent faced sharp criticism from one of his close friends and mentors, legendary hedge fund investor Stanley Druckenmiller. In an opinion piece, Druckenmiller took aim at Bessent's intervention in the U.S. bond market, calling the move to suppress yields through increased government buybacks a misstep.

Druckenmiller argued that there was no market dysfunction justifying such action, pointing instead to elevated inflation and unchecked federal debt as the primary drivers of rising yields. Investor focus quickly shifted from the shock of Druckenmiller's public rebuke of his protégé to speculation about whether he had employed artificial intelligence to pen the article. Some social media observers claimed that after running the text through AI detection tools, they believed it to be machine-assisted.

In an interview, Druckenmiller acknowledged that he did use AI to help craft the piece. "I was a B student in English, but an A+ in economics," he said. "These are my own thoughts, and I've been talking about these topics for over 15 years—anyone who knows me can attest to that. Do I wish I could write beautifully? Yes, but it's not my strength." Druckenmiller noted that he and his family office colleagues use all major AI tools in their work—Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Perplexity—including for writing purposes. He likened it to relying on a speechwriter or a calculator.

"At 73, I'm actually proud to use it," he said, though he declined to specify which AI tool assisted with the article, which he wrote during a weekend getaway with his grandchildren. "AI is a reality of modern life," said Paul Gigot, editor of the opinion section, in a statement. "For us, the question is whether what we publish from contributors reflects the author's original argument, and whether the author has the stature and credibility to make that argument. In Stan Druckenmiller's case, we've worked with him for years, and no one would doubt that his column expresses his genuine views."
