China's May Manufacturing PMI Stagnates at 50.0% Threshold

The National Bureau of Statistics of China reported on May 31st that the official Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for May stood at 50.0%, indicating no change in expansion or contraction compared to the previous month's reading. This figure represents a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from April, placing it precisely at the demarcation line between expansion and contraction.

A breakdown by enterprise size reveals a divergence in performance. The PMI for large enterprises rose by 0.9 percentage points to 51.1%, remaining above the critical threshold. In contrast, the PMI for medium-sized enterprises fell by 1.9 percentage points to 48.6%, while the PMI for small enterprises declined by 1.6 percentage points to 48.5%, both figures falling below the expansion-contraction line.
