Gold Price Rebounds: Is a Strategic Allocation Window Opening for Investors?

Global gold prices staged a dramatic rally on August 20, surging nearly $190 in a single session to touch an intraday high of $4,523 per ounce, marking the largest one-day percentage gain in six months.

By August 24, accumulation gold quotes at multiple domestic banks had broken through the 1,000 yuan per gram threshold. August's price strength quickly ignited retail demand, reigniting promotional campaigns for accumulation gold products at commercial banks. Net asset values of "fixed income plus gold" wealth management products, which had previously fallen below par, have recovered to new highs, fueling widespread talk that the window for gold allocation has reopened.

Experts caution, however, that gold is not a guaranteed-profit asset. Different gold products have vastly different structures, and investors must distinguish the functional attributes of each instrument and approach the current price rally with rationality.

Banks Roll Out Enhanced Accumulation Gold Incentives as Gold-Linked Wealth Products Recover

Since August, the international gold market has decisively broken free from its earlier range-bound consolidation, launching a powerful rebound. Prices briefly reached $4,600 per ounce on August 24, representing a gain of more than 15% from the end of July's $4,000 level.

Accompanying the price rebound, accumulation gold marketing campaigns intensified in August. Bank of China is offering a promotional event valid through December 31, where investors purchasing via weekly Friday dollar-cost averaging or single transactions receive a 1 yuan per gram discount. Large single orders qualify for tiered discounts, with wealth management, wealth, and private banking clients receiving an additional 1-3 yuan reduction—stacking up to a maximum of 5 yuan per gram savings.

ICBC has temporarily reduced its active accumulation gold subscription fee rate from 0.5% to 0.2% for the period July 1 through September 30. Its Shaanxi branch is offering new customer perks, including 18,000 to 88,000 ICBC i-points for those who sign up for accumulation gold services before August 31.

China CITIC Bank's Baixin Bank is recruiting "Gold Experience Officers," extending accumulation gold trading until 2:00 AM the following day with a bid-ask spread of approximately 2.2 yuan per gram. China Construction Bank and China Merchants Bank have extended trading hours into the early morning, launching overnight trading services. Industrial Bank has integrated accumulation gold into the digital yuan app, enabling investments with a minimum threshold of just 1 gram.

"Currently, setting up a recurring accumulation gold plan directly waives handling fees, and buying gold comes with instant discounts—making it a highly cost-effective investment," said a customer manager at a major state-owned bank branch in Beijing.

The gold price recovery has also boosted net asset values of bank gold-linked wealth management products. As of August 20, CMB Wealth Management's Zhaorui Jiayin (Stable Gold) 1-Year Holding Daily Open No. 2 product achieved a net value of 1.019, with gains of 0.61% over the past month and 0.75% over three months, bringing total returns since inception to 2.06%.

According to the product's operations team, the fund was launched in early March, coinciding with a gold market adjustment period. During the position-building phase, the team prioritized high-yielding fixed income assets to secure stable base returns. After gold prices stabilized in July, the team modestly increased the allocation to gold-related assets, capturing the rebound through refined dynamic rebalancing and contributing positive returns to the portfolio.

Beyond CMB Wealth Management, several other products—including Minsheng Wealth Management's Maozhu Fixed Income Gold Enhanced Half-Year Holding, Everbright Wealth Management's Sunny Qingrui No. 1, and Zheshang Bank Wealth Management's Congrong Jiuxi Yield Enhancement No. 2—have also seen net values trend higher recently, emerging from previous consecutive declines.

Product Structures Differ Significantly, Risk Profiles Vary Widely

With returns now positive, many investors remain conflicted about whether to add positions or redeem. Experts suggest that the decision hinges not only on international gold prices but also on the structural differences between products.

The aforementioned bank customer manager explained that accumulation gold is essentially a gold savings account opened by the bank for clients. Investors can purchase gold shares in gram increments periodically, similar to depositing money into a passbook account. Gold accumulation operates in two primary modes: active accumulation, where investors choose their timing to buy during trading hours, and periodic accumulation, which involves automatic monthly deductions at a fixed amount to average out holding costs.

Held positions can be realized through two channels: direct redemption by selling at the bank's quoted price with funds returned to the bank card, or exchanging for physical gold bars once a specified gram threshold is reached, though this requires paying an additional processing fee.

It's important to note that gold accumulation itself generates no interest—returns track gold price movements entirely. Real-time price fluctuations can lead to temporary paper losses for short-term holders, and sellers face bid-ask spreads (approximately 2-5 yuan per gram), redemption fees, and handling charges.

Dong Ximiao, chief economist at Merchants Union Consumer Finance, told reporters that "fixed income plus gold" wealth management products differ structurally from gold accumulation products, with significantly different risk profiles. Currently, gold-linked wealth management products typically allocate no less than 80% of assets to fixed income instruments such as government bonds, financial bonds, high-grade credit bonds, and bank deposits to secure stable coupon income. The remaining funds gain gold exposure through various channels, including direct purchases of gold ETFs or gold equities, investments tied to Shanghai Gold Exchange spot gold, and over-the-counter gold options derivatives.

This design makes product net values sensitive to both bond market movements and gold price fluctuations. However, if the gold allocation is low, the correlation with gold prices weakens. Investors must carefully review product prospectuses to distinguish genuine gold exposure from marketing hype.

Beyond accumulation gold and gold-linked wealth management products, other gold investment categories include gold ETFs and physical gold purchases. Gold ETFs offer low transaction costs and high liquidity with real-time trading during market hours, but require a securities account and cannot be traded outside exchange hours. Physical gold retains strong value-preservation attributes but carries high purchase premiums, significant resale discounts, and weaker investment characteristics.

Flexible Allocation Strategy: Control Position Sizes and Avoid Chasing Highs

What lies ahead for gold prices, and how should investors position themselves? Wang Lixin, CEO of the World Gold Council China, stated that gold prices are expected to maintain a high-level, upward-trending range over the next three to five years. In the short term, however, prices may fluctuate with market sentiment, and investors should avoid blindly chasing highs, instead building positions on pullbacks.

Wang reminded investors that gold should serve as a "ballast stone" for long-term asset allocation rather than a tool for short-term wealth creation.

Dong Ximiao noted that gold-linked wealth management products suit investors with moderate risk tolerance who wish to avoid the volatility of equity markets while seeking excess returns on top of fixed income. Extremely conservative investors who cannot accept any principal drawdown, speculators expecting quick profits, and those who blindly follow trends without understanding the underlying assets should exercise caution or avoid these products entirely.

Experts advise consumers to maintain gold-related allocations at 5% to 15% of their total investment portfolio, with aggressive investors capped at 20%. Positions should be built in batches, avoiding high-chasing behavior, and investors should never heavily bet on short-term price movements.

When investing, it's crucial to distinguish between products and not be misled by marketing campaigns. Those buying accumulation gold should thoroughly read risk disclosure documents, understanding bid-ask spreads and redemption restrictions. For gold-linked wealth management products, the focus should be on the "investment scope" section of the prospectus rather than the product name, with careful review of gold holding ratios, derivatives terms, and historical drawdowns.

Additionally, investors must adhere to channel integrity by choosing regulated institutions such as banks and securities firms, staying away from so-called high-return "gold wealth management" or "gold custody" products promoted on online platforms, and remaining vigilant against financial fraud.
