During the recently concluded National Day holiday, monitored sites across Nanjing including scenic spots, cultural and museum venues, and rural tourism destinations collectively received 17.956 million visitor trips, a daily average increase of 5.2% compared to last year. Out-of-town visitors accounted for 71.7% of the total, up 1.3 percentage points from last year. Unlike local audiences who "watch and leave," out-of-town concertgoers stayed an average of 2 to 3 days, with "watching a show + visiting attractions + savoring local cuisine" becoming the standard itinerary.

Just how hot is Nanjing's performance market this autumn? During the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, the city hosted 9 large-scale performances. Data from Dengta showed a cumulative audience of 288,000, with total box office revenue of 350 million yuan, and large-scale performances drove nearly 2.4 billion yuan in other consumption across the city. During the National Day holiday, the city hosted 10 large-scale performances. Dengta data showed a cumulative audience of 194,000, accounting for 43.9% of the province's total, with box office revenue of 172 million yuan, representing 52.5% of the province's total.

Combining both sets of data, during the dual-holiday period Nanjing hosted nearly 20 large-scale performances, with total attendance approaching 500,000 and combined box office revenue exceeding 500 million yuan — a standout figure even on the national performance market map. From September 25 to October 6, Hua Chenyu performed seven consecutive shows in Nanjing, drawing legions of fans and repeatedly igniting immersive "Mars" music celebrations.

During this year's Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, Nanjing continued to go viral with its dense performance schedule and sizzling concert scenes. The traffic effect of performances translated into tangible growth on the consumption side. Nanjing Tangshan Hot Spring RV Campground is only a 10-minute drive from the Hua Chenyu concert venue. From October 1 to 6, the campground's 40 RVs were fully booked for six straight days. "This wave of bookings started queuing back in August, and most guests came for the concert," said camp manager Chen Yongxian with a smile. College student fan Liu Yafei, who traveled from Suzhou with friends, booked an RV with three roommates a week in advance.

In interviews, many industry insiders noted that Nanjing's performance market has formed a "one large, one small" dual-engine development pattern: large-scale concerts with tens of thousands of attendees build fame and traffic, while small performances in streets and alleys solidify the foundation. The two complement each other and together construct a complete performing arts ecosystem.

Large-scale performances showcase the city's hardcore capacity

During the Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays, from core professional venues in the main city such as Nanjing Olympic Sports Center and Youth Olympic Sports Park, to outdoor venues like Jiangning Tangshan Music Valley and Lishui Tianshengqiao Music Valley, to distinctive spaces such as the Garden Expo Park and Jiangxinzhou, large-scale performances covered multiple districts including the main city, Jiangning, Lishui, and Gaochun. The artist lineup was equally diverse: top-tier singers like Jay Chou and Hua Chenyu, powerhouse vocalists like Wakin Chau and Jane Zhang, as well as outdoor music festivals gathering diverse bands, covering aesthetic preferences across different age groups.

Small performances fill the city with cultural vitality

From immersive Peking opera interactions in the Xinanli district, to crosstalk and stand-up comedy at Laomendong, from livehouses in Xinjiekou and Xianlin, to immersive Chinese-style comedy at Jinling STYLE Romantic Center, various small performances are scattered across commercial districts, streets, and historical cultural spaces. From September 30 to October 7, "Wind Rises in Jinling" produced by the Nanjing Drama Troupe performed 21 consecutive shows. An audience survey confirmed this small theater production's cultural tourism appeal: during regular weekend shows, out-of-town audience members accounted for 70%–80%; during holiday periods, out-of-town visitors exceeded 90%, with single-show attendance reaching as high as 120% (including temporary seating).

How can the "hot streak" continue? A wave of performances is still on the way

Nanjing's performances are "hot" enough, and the city is increasingly shouldering expectations of giving national tours "a good start." In May this year, Hou Minghao's tour kicked off its national debut at Nanjing Youth Olympic Sports Park Arena; last year, Pu Shu likewise made his first public appearance of the year in Nanjing, emotionally expressing his connection to the city on stage. Hua Chenyu announced additional shows at his Nanjing concert, and after the debut of the Park 2.0 performance model during the Mid-Autumn and National Day period, six more concerts will land in Nanjing starting October 24.

Nanjing boasts multiple professional venues capable of hosting tens of thousands of people, including the Olympic Sports Center Arena and Youth Olympic Sports Park Arena, adaptable to various performance needs from large-scale tours to boutique stage productions; its one-hour high-speed rail circle covers a population of over 100 million, making "cross-city concert-going" a convenient lifestyle; and the "Nanjing efficiency" of proactively stepping forward and optimizing services has repeatedly earned praise from performance organizers. "From top-tier singers' stadium tours, to stage arts like drama and musicals, to niche bands' livehouse shows, performance projects of different scales and types can all find suitable venues in Nanjing," said Mr. Xia, head of a talent agency, noting that Nanjing's industrial support capacity is the core confidence behind its status as the top choice for tour launches.
