Empowering Workers Through Sport: A Championship That Ignites Passion and Unity

Deep in the Wuling Mountains, the rhythm of a bouncing basketball beats in sync with pounding hearts. On the evening of August 13th, the Enshi Sports Center in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province, blazed under the lights as the finals of the 2026 (4th) "En BA" Basketball Tournament's worker division tipped off. Along the sidelines, waves of cheers rose and fell. Workers who usually spend their days in overalls on the front lines traded them for jerseys, becoming the stars of the court. Sweat and laughter wove together into the most stirring anthem of labor this summer.

Since its debut in 2023, marking the 40th anniversary of the founding of Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, "En BA" has grown over four years. This April, it was selected as a national exemplary case for mass "big three ball" sports events in 2025. Co-created by the Enshi Prefecture Federation of Trade Unions, the Prefecture Culture and Tourism Bureau, the Prefecture United Front Work Department, and other agencies, this worker sports brand has attracted over a thousand teams and tens of thousands of athletes, with cumulative online and offline attention surpassing 7 billion views.

Giving Every Worker a Chance to Shine

"Take off the work clothes, you're a builder; put on the jersey, you're a dream chaser." This is not just a slogan—it's the reality on the "En BA" court. This year's tournament featured nine competition zones, divided into four categories: worker, township, enterprise, and women's divisions. The prefecture-level worker division alone saw 32 teams and 512 athletes battle through 160 games; the Enshi City zone brought together 26 teams and nearly 400 officials and workers; the Badong zone gathered 31 teams and over 350 athletes; and the Lichuan City zone registered 49 teams for 142 games. Behind these numbers are countless ordinary workers reignited. Participants include frontline factory workers, rural teachers, grassroots doctors, and power grid repair crews. On the court, they shed their professional labels and compete purely as basketball enthusiasts. A teacher from Hubei Minzu University remarked after a game, "'En BA' helped me rediscover the passion and drive of my youth in an ordinary career." Another worker shared, "The league's atmosphere is fantastic—it keeps you fit and lets you connect and compete with peers from all industries. Friendships quietly grow with every attack and defensive stand." To put more workers on center stage, the trade unions have gone all out. In the Badong zone, for instance, the tournament was hosted by the county's Federation of Trade Unions and Culture and Tourism Bureau, with the county basketball association organizing it. From venue coordination and schedule planning to safety protocols and logistical support, union services were woven throughout every detail. The Enshi Prefecture Federation of Trade Unions also worked with relevant departments to establish a closed-loop management system: thorough pre-game inspections, on-site '1+N' staffing during events, and systematic post-game reviews.

The Union's Service Circle Extends Beyond the Court

How does a basketball game become a major platform for worker services? The Enshi Prefecture Federation of Trade Unions' answer is to use the event as a vehicle, ensuring union services are omnipresent and always available. Inside the arena, unions focus on the "key small details." Grassroots unions took on team logistics, from purchasing accident insurance and custom jerseys to supplying game equipment—nothing overlooked. The Hubei Enshi College Union coordinated throughout, providing high-standard, meticulous operational support for the event; the Hubei Minzu University Union, under the leadership of the university's party committee, offered full logistical backing. Many grassroots union cadres served as "team leaders, logistics staff, and cheerleaders" all at once, embodying the principle: "Where workers have needs, the union responds." Outside the arena, unions extended their service reach even further. Leveraging the "union+" model, they integrated recuperation bases and union service station resources to weave a tighter worker support network. These stations have become trusted "warm anchors" for both workers and tourists. Enshi Tourism Group has offered free admission packages to players for two consecutive years, turning participating workers and their families into a new engine for tourism consumption. The innovative "competition zone + scenic area" and "venue + marketplace" models continue to deliver dividends. According to statistics, event-related industries have directly or indirectly created over 3,000 jobs and attracted 28 Enshi natives to return home and start businesses. Basketball has evolved from a mere competitive sport into a powerful lever for improving workers' quality of life and driving local development.

Uniting Millions of Workers Through the Power of the Ball

The value of "En BA" goes far beyond a single game; it has become a vital spiritual vehicle for rallying worker strength and fueling enthusiasm for work and innovation. In December 2025, the 31st session of the Standing Committee of the Ninth Enshi Prefecture People's Congress passed the "Decision on Promoting the High-Quality Development of the En BA Basketball Tournament," explicitly aiming to foster exchange, enhance skills, boost industry, attract visitors, and build unity through the sport. Behind this is the proactive effort of unions to integrate worker cultural and sports activities into the broader regional development strategy. In Enshi, basketball is more than just a game—it's a way of life and a symbol of solidarity. A representative from the Enshi Prefecture Federation of Trade Unions stated, "'En BA' is no longer just basketball; it's the after-work passion of government employees, the brightest light in rural nights, and an emotional bond connecting workers of all ethnicities in exchange and interaction." From "workwear" to "jerseys," from the production line to the competitive arena, "En BA" is writing a new chapter for Enshi's millions of workers—where everyone can find their moment in the spotlight, and where the union remains the ever-present "family" that quietly builds the stage, serves with heart, and guards with warmth. As the final whistle blows and the championship trophy is hoisted high, the sporting spirit and passion for work that define Enshi's workers continue to echo across the mountains and rivers of Wuling.
