A significant majority of Americans report feeling economic strain due to historic increases in gas prices. According to a poll released on Wednesday by NPR, PBS News, and Marist, over 80% of respondents stated that rising fuel costs have caused serious (33%) or moderate (48%) pressure on their household budgets. Only 19% indicated that fuel prices have not caused them any financial stress.

Data from the American Automobile Association shows that the national average price for regular gasoline has risen for 15 consecutive days, reaching $4.56 per gallon on Thursday. This marks a significant increase from the $2.98 per gallon average seen before the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.

The poll, conducted from April 27 to April 30, revealed that 63% of Americans primarily or partially blame President Donald Trump for the high prices. This view is held by 89% of Democrats, 32% of Republicans, and 63% of independents. Conversely, only 37% of the public believes Trump bears little or no responsibility.

Currently, the average gas price is at or above $4 per gallon in 47 states. The highest prices are found in California ($6.16), Washington ($5.75), Hawaii ($5.66), and Oregon ($5.33). The three states with the largest year-over-year price increases—Ohio (up $1.71), Michigan (up $1.64), and Alaska (up $1.61)—were all states Trump won in the 2024 presidential election.
