The owner of the New York Stock Exchange, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), has agreed to purchase MarketAxess, a move that highlights the ongoing shift toward electronic and automated trading within the bond market. This acquisition merges two major complementary platforms in the global fixed-income space, combining ICE's market infrastructure and data analytics capabilities with MarketAxess's extensive institutional bond trading network, which serves approximately 2,100 institutional investors and broker-dealers across more than 90 countries.
Jeff Sprecher, Chief Executive Officer of Intercontinental Exchange, stated: "Acquiring MarketAxess is a logical next step in our development. Together, we will build the fixed-income ecosystem that investors deserve—one that is transparent, efficient, fully connected, and open to all participants." Key terms of the deal include a cash purchase price of $167 per share, representing a 33% premium over MarketAxess's closing price as of July 29, 2026, with a total enterprise value of approximately $5.7 billion.
The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals. BofA Securities is serving as financial advisor to Intercontinental Exchange, while J.P. Morgan Securities LLC is advising MarketAxess.
