Shanghai Banking Sector Reports 30.17 Trillion Yuan in Total Assets for January 2026, Up 14.9% Year-on-Year

According to data released by the Shanghai Financial Regulatory Bureau, the total assets of banking institutions within its jurisdiction reached 30.17 trillion yuan by the end of January 2026, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 14.90%. Among these, commercial banks held total assets of 26.65 trillion yuan, up 15.90% from the same period last year. Large commercial banks accounted for 11.60 trillion yuan in assets, growing by 21.62%, while joint-stock commercial banks reported assets of 7.23 trillion yuan, an increase of 17.34%.

Total liabilities of banking institutions under Shanghai's jurisdiction stood at 28.92 trillion yuan as of January 2026, rising 15.22% compared to the prior year. Commercial banks recorded liabilities totaling 25.92 trillion yuan, up 16.23% year-on-year. Large commercial banks held liabilities of 11.51 trillion yuan, increasing by 21.72%, and joint-stock commercial banks reported liabilities of 7.21 trillion yuan, up 17.27%.

The non-performing loan balance for banking institutions in Shanghai was 121.541 billion yuan by the end of January 2026, with a non-performing loan ratio of 0.95%. For commercial banks specifically, the NPL balance was 101.427 billion yuan, and the NPL ratio stood at 0.93%.

In the insurance sector, cumulative original premium income for insurers in Shanghai reached 56.658 billion yuan in January 2026. Property insurance companies contributed 11.241 billion yuan, while life insurance companies generated 45.417 billion yuan in premiums.

Total original insurance compensation payouts for the same period amounted to 15.314 billion yuan. Property insurers paid out 3.486 billion yuan, and life insurers disbursed 11.828 billion yuan in claims.
