The beverage market is witnessing a surge of products with similar packaging and names like "Quick Hydration", "Hydration Joy", and "Hydrate Now", following the success of EASTROC's Hydration product as its second growth engine. This has set the stage for an imminent "hydration war".
To confront this intense competition, EASTROC is mounting a comprehensive response. The company has signed football star Kylian Mbappé as an endorser, upgraded its marketing tactics, and made a significant investment in the upcoming World Cup.
The Hydration War Kicks Off with the World Cup
As the World Cup approaches, the battle for brand marketing off the pitch is already underway, with EASTROC among the key players. The year 2026 is expected to be the most fiercely contested period in this "hydration war".
As a rising contender in the electrolyte beverage segment, EASTROC's Hydration product has officially entered the fray, having previously announced football superstar Kylian Mbappé as its brand ambassador. The 27-year-old French star, now playing for Real Madrid with a market value of 180 million euros, is one of the highest-valued active players and was among the most dazzling performers in the last two World Cups. His team, France, is a favorite to win the upcoming tournament, making Mbappé a major focal point.
EASTROC has stated it secured sponsorship rights for the World Cup with a substantial budget. By May, advertisements featuring the Hydration product and its new ambassador, Mbappé, were already visible on buses in Beijing. The company aims to leverage the ambassador's influence to elevate the Hydration brand and build it into the next multi-billion-yuan brand.
Launched in early 2023, the Hydration product successfully replicated the development path of EASTROC's core energy drink, achieving rapid growth and becoming a "rising star" in its niche. In the relatively small electrolyte drink sector, Hydration generated sales of 3.274 billion yuan last year, a year-on-year increase of 118.99%, quickly catching up to established competitor Alien. This rapid success in an industry plagued by price wars and a lack of breakthrough new products has attracted numerous competitors who are quickly following suit.
In March, beverage leader Nongfu Spring announced a new electrolyte drink with "Electrolyte" prominently displayed on the bottle, offering 550ml in grapefruit and lemon flavors, and employing a "win a prize upon opening" marketing strategy, directly targeting Hydration. By early June, this new product was already on supermarket shelves in Beijing, priced at 4.8 yuan, while Hydration (555ml) was priced at around 4 yuan.
Furthermore, brands like Jinmailang launched "Quick Hydration", Yinlu introduced "More Hydration", Daliyuan released "Hydration Joy", PepsiCo's Gatorade debuted "Fast Hydration", Jianlibao rolled out "Thirsty?", and Hope Water marketed "Hydration Solution"... From well-known brands to obscure and even copycat ones, the market is flooded with products bearing similar names and packaging—"Hydrate Ah", "Hydrated", "Hydration Water", "Hydrate Fast", "Come Hydrate", "Super Hydrate"—leaving consumers confused.
The success of Hydration has triggered fierce industry competition, with an estimated over a hundred similar hydration products expected to hit the market this year, including entries from giants like Nongfu Spring and Coca-Cola. This year is poised to be the most intense period of the "hydration war".
Large and small competitors are not only entering the market but are also attacking Hydration using its own successful formula of "large volume + low price + prize marketing". Compared to leading brands like Alien and Pocari Sweat, which retail around 6 yuan for a 500ml bottle, Hydration offers a 1L bottle for 6 yuan and a 555ml bottle for around 4 yuan, emphasizing value for money. Additionally, leveraging EASTROC's existing distribution channels and high-win-rate promotional activities like "One Yuan Fun Buy" and scan-to-win red packets, Hydration became an industry dark horse.
However, new entrants are employing identical marketing tactics. Jinmailang's "Quick Hydration" sells a 1L bottle for just 4 yuan, undercutting Hydration. Nongfu Spring, Jianlibao, Yinlu, and even established player Alien have adopted similar "One Yuan Fun" and scan-to-win promotions. Having emerged as a dark horse, Hydration now faces a "hydration war" launched by established giants and countless new followers, forcing it into a defensive battle.
EASTROC's heavy investment in signing Mbappé is naturally intended to bolster Hydration, allowing it to actively engage in this war. The company aims to deeply associate the product with diverse hydration scenarios during the World Cup viewing frenzy, such as staying up late to watch games, outdoor sports, fitness, daily commuting, and campus military training. This strategy seeks to break the niche perception of electrolyte drinks being solely for professional athletes and extend their appeal to casual fans, Gen Z students, and the general public.
Compelled to Continue Innovating
Growth is paramount for EASTROC. An industry analyst noted that when a product category hasn't gained widespread popularity, competitors hold back, but once its market potential is evident, they flock to it. This aligns with commercial logic and the nature of the beverage industry. However, EASTROC already holds certain advantages, with strong product power, channel strength, brand power, team execution, and significant investments in marketing, promotions, and refrigeration equipment.
Confronted with a chaotic and fiercely competitive electrolyte drink market, Hydration is compelled to keep innovating—not only by signing a star endorser but also by upgrading its marketing tactics. In community supermarkets, the 555ml Hydration is priced around 4 yuan, and promotional activities have been upgraded from scan-to-win and "One Yuan Fun" to "Free Fun". Distributors report that while large chain supermarkets and online channels primarily use scan-to-win red packets, community stores have fully transitioned to the "Free Fun" promotion.
Under this promotion, retailers scanning one bottle cap receive 1 yuan directly, which promotes sales and offers profit comparable to regular retail. The high win rate, sometimes resulting in consecutive wins, means consumers might get several bottles for the price of one. This strategy not only rewards consumers but also boosts repurchase rates and drives sales at the point of purchase.
Since its listing in May 2021, EASTROC has experienced rapid growth under its leadership. Revenue surpassed 10 billion yuan in 2023, exceeded 15 billion yuan in 2024, and broke through 20 billion yuan in 2025. In 2025, the company achieved operating revenue of 20.875 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 31.80%, and net profit attributable to shareholders of 4.415 billion yuan, up 32.72%. Although the growth rate has moderated compared to the previous two years, it remains high.
A key factor in this beverage star's success is value for money. Its core energy drink, seen as an affordable alternative to Red Bull, caters to consumption trends and its main consumer base with practical packaging. However, since going public, the company has faced questions about over-reliance on this core single product.
Starting in 2024, EASTROC fully implemented a "1+6" multi-category strategy. Beyond its flagship energy drink, the company has launched the electrolyte drink Hydration, ready-to-drink coffee Eastroc Big Cup, tea beverages like Oolong Supreme and Friend Supreme, as well as attempts with other new products like Fruit Tea, Hong Kong-Style Milk Tea, and Island Coconut. The emergence and rapid growth of Hydration have supported EASTROC's second growth curve.
However, as competition in the "hydration war" intensifies, Hydration's explosive growth momentum has slowed, and the core energy drink's growth has also decelerated. For the first quarter of 2026, EASTROC reported operating revenue of 5.888 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 21.46%; net profit attributable to shareholders of 1.257 billion yuan, up 28.31%; and net cash flow from operating activities of 452 million yuan, a decrease of 28.35% year-on-year.
While such growth remains impressive in the beverage industry, it marks a significant slowdown compared to the company's own past performance. In the same period, revenue from the energy drink segment was 4.412 billion yuan, up about 13%; electrolyte drink revenue was 645 million yuan, growing less than 13.2%; while revenue from other beverages reached 826 million yuan, surging approximately 120%, becoming the brightest segment.
Over a longer timeline, the first-quarter 2026 growth pales in comparison to the first quarters of 2025, where the energy drink and electrolyte drink segments grew by 25.7% and 260.8% respectively. This has raised market concerns about EASTROC's growth drivers.
As of the close on June 8th, EASTROC's total market capitalization stood at 100 billion yuan. Compared to its peak in June 2025, the share price has fallen over 46% in one year. The company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on February 3rd, becoming the first domestic energy drink company with dual A+H listings. However, by June 8th, its Hong Kong stock price had nearly halved compared to the issue price within four months.
With market competition intensifying and blue oceans turning red, EASTROC stated that entering the peak consumption season in the second quarter, the company is accelerating the distribution and shipment of its hydration products, preparing inventory in advance based on terminal demand to seize the peak season market window.
The beverage industry is one of full competition. While the business model may seem simple, excelling in it is not easy. Competition has long evolved from a single product dimension to a comprehensive contest involving consumer insight, product innovation, distribution networks, production capacity layout, brand building, and organizational capabilities. Achieving success in this industry requires more effort than others. The company's leadership emphasizes a focus on diligence, concentration, and perfecting simplicity rather than relying on being smarter than competitors.
