What they will study, how they will learn, and what outcomes they achieve deserve closer attention. For students, admission results signify different cities, environments, and future career paths. Yet from a broader perspective, the selection of university majors and the admissions process are the product of multiple forces, including national higher education development, industrial upgrading, and societal evolution, serving as a mirror that reflects the future direction of both the nation and society.
National urgency becomes the core benchmark
In this year's admission results, the majors that saw the most significant score increases were predominantly in emerging engineering fields, such as integrated circuits, new energy, and high-end equipment manufacturing. In Guangdong Province, admission scores for these new engineering majors generally rose by 10 to 30 points, with rankings moving up by thousands of places. Hubei Province followed a similar pattern, with increases of 10 to 20 points and rankings advancing by thousands. Demand drives development, and the popularity of university majors now closely aligns with industrial needs. According to the "2026 China College Graduate Employment Report" released by MyCOS, a Chinese higher education consulting firm, the "green-listed majors" for undergraduate programs in 2026 include electrical engineering and automation, microelectronics science and engineering, automation, energy and power engineering, vehicle engineering, and new energy science and engineering. These "green-listed majors" refer to fields with consistently strong employment quality and growing industrial demand. Analyzing these majors reveals a common trait: they are all urgently needed by the nation. For instance, automation has entered the "green list" for the first time this year, primarily due to the talent demand generated by the intelligent transformation of the manufacturing sector, prompting universities to invest more in this discipline. Microelectronics science and engineering has been on the "green list" for five consecutive years, closely tied to the nation's push for chip self-sufficiency.
A candidate from Hebei, surnamed Qu, had the option to choose business or science majors like international trade or physics when filling out his college applications. After discussions with his family, he ultimately selected microelectronics science and engineering at a "Double First-Class" university. "My parents and I deliberated repeatedly and finally chose an engineering major because the job prospects are strong, and the country has been pouring resources into the chip industry in recent years, so there's bound to be better development ahead," Qu told reporters. In April of this year, the Ministry of Education released the "Undergraduate Majors Catalog for Regular Higher Education Institutions (2026)," which explicitly emphasizes leveraging technological innovation, industrial development, and national strategic needs as guiding forces to continuously enhance higher education's support and contribution to high-quality growth. To precisely align with national strategic needs, new majors such as energy science and engineering and deep-earth science and engineering were added. To promote innovation in emerging and future industries, new fields like bio-manufacturing and brain-computer science and technology were introduced. Statistics show that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, over 10,200 new undergraduate major programs were established nationwide, while 12,200 were revoked or suspended.
"The 'heat' of certain majors is anchored in the 'urgent needs' of national industrial development strategy, which is also a key direction for supply-side reform in higher education," said Song Guojie, a tenured associate professor at Peking University's School of Intelligence, who has long been involved in admissions work. He noted that the logic of discipline layout in Chinese higher education is now tightly aligned with serving national strategic needs, and admissions efforts focus on explaining these factors to students and parents in detail to help them choose majors that suit both their interests and the nation's requirements. This alignment with national needs is also influencing admissions at vocational and technical colleges. Vocational schools have long been mired in bias, often seen as a last-resort option. However, this year has seen a significant shift, especially for public undergraduate vocational institutions. Shenzhen Polytechnic University, a vocational school offering undergraduate programs, increased its physics-track undergraduate enrollment in Guangdong from 899 last year to 1,825 this year. Its admission cutoff score rose by 5 points compared to 2025, with the highest score reaching 610, which is 185 points above Guangdong's undergraduate control line. The 610-point program was electronic information engineering technology (experimental class), which, according to the university's official website, focuses on cultivating skilled talent for three industry clusters: consumer electronics, smart healthcare, and intelligent manufacturing. Notably, in Shenzhen Polytechnic University's associate degree admissions in Guangdong, the electronic information program's cutoff reached 497 points, 72 points above the province's undergraduate control line. This indicates that under the guidance of national strategic needs and industrial upgrading, vocational colleges' advantage in cultivating high-end skilled talent is gradually emerging and gaining favor among students. Among the 27 new vocational undergraduate and associate degree majors added by the Ministry of Education, a batch of programs in fields such as the digital economy, low-altitude economy, artificial intelligence, and high-end equipment were prioritized to better align the structure of vocational education majors with industrial demand.
Artificial intelligence leaves a profound mark
If one were to identify the hottest field in the first half of 2026, artificial intelligence would undoubtedly claim a spot. As technology iterates rapidly, large models become more intelligent, and application scenarios grow richer, AI's impact on ordinary individuals is becoming increasingly evident. This enthusiasm is reflected in this year's admission results, with AI emerging as a top choice among applicants. According to real-time data from Baidu's college entrance exam hot search platform, AI-related majors consistently ranked in the national top ten, at times even breaking into the top three. This attention is mirrored in admission outcomes: in Zhejiang Province's 2026 first-batch regular undergraduate admission data, Tongji University's AI major had a cutoff score of 677, with 6 planned slots. A check of last year's results for the same major shows 5 planned slots and a minimum score of 673, meaning that even with expanded enrollment, the cutoff rose. Similar examples abound. Beijing University of Technology's AI experimental class had a cutoff of 646 in Zhejiang last year, ranking 12,990th; this year, it rose to 652, with a ranking of 11,480. Comparing the two, with unchanged planned enrollment, the score increased by 9 points and the ranking improved by 1,510 places. Many parents report that not just prestigious universities but also ordinary undergraduate institutions with AI programs are drawing intense interest. "As long as it's an AI major, regardless of the school, it becomes popular," one parent remarked. "In recent years, more and more students are inquiring about AI majors. Accelerating technological iterations and growing government support have caught the attention of students and parents alike," said Song Guojie.
However, the rise of AI is also cooling interest in certain disciplines, particularly some humanities majors. There was once a "golden rule" in college applications: majors like economics, management, and foreign languages were considered versatile choices that could be selected with eyes closed. Yet, under the wave of AI technology, this rule is gradually losing its sway. Translation, once a highly sought-after foreign language major, is a prime example. AI translation can now replace human labor in many scenarios, leading to a decline in application enthusiasm for translation programs. Many broad humanities and management-related majors are also seeing reduced interest from applicants, with admission cutoffs generally declining. "But the development of AI technology also offers a new opportunity for humanities students," Song Guojie told reporters. "Even without specialized programming skills, humanities students can use AI tools to design, develop, and iterate digital products on their own, and they may even possess unique advantages in doing so."
Interdisciplinary integration holds great promise
Admission scores rise and fall. Clinical medicine has long been a popular choice, with cutoffs and rankings consistently near the top across provinces. However, based on this year's admission results, aside from long-track medical programs at top-tier institutions, clinical medicine has seen varying degrees of decline in both cutoff scores and ranking positions. Experts attribute this to factors such as high learning costs, steep professional barriers, a saturated job market, and intense work pressure, which are discouraging students from pursuing medical majors. Additionally, the rise of new engineering disciplines is exerting a stronger pull on students. But the situation is not uniform. "In recent years, many interdisciplinary fields have emerged in medicine, gradually attracting the attention of students and parents," said Ma Chengchuan, an assistant professor at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. For example, directions combining clinical medicine with engineering technology and big data, biopharmaceuticals, and intelligent healthcare are all interdisciplinary fusion majors. These emerging medical interdisciplinary programs generally see higher cutoffs and rankings, sometimes even surpassing those of traditional clinical medicine at certain institutions. "The shift from treating illness to promoting health has changed the philosophy of medical talent cultivation, and there is a growing demand for versatile medical professionals across more niche tracks," Ma analyzed. The trend of interdisciplinary integration extends beyond medicine. The 2026 edition of the "Undergraduate Majors Catalog" added a new "interdisciplinary" category, initially including 11 existing majors such as future robotics and interdisciplinary engineering, as well as four new majors: embodied intelligence, brain-computer science and technology, engineering internet, and deep-earth science and engineering. "Previously, interdisciplinary programs were mostly self-driven explorations by universities. This year, the catalog formally establishes an interdisciplinary category at the top-level design level to encourage integration, which holds significant importance for student growth and development," Song Guojie stated.
Business, humanities, and social science disciplines are also moving toward interdisciplinary integration, with increasingly diverse forms. For instance, as China continues to open up, foreign-related legal studies within law have become a hot field. But mastering this major requires not only a deep understanding of law but also knowledge of traditional humanities like foreign languages and history, as well as familiarity with science and engineering fields such as AI and digital technology.
