NASA's Artemis II mission achieved a critical milestone on Thursday when the Orion capsule, carrying four astronauts, performed a successful thruster burn. This maneuver will propel the crew out of Earth's orbit and onto a path toward the Moon, setting them up to break the record for the farthest distance humans have traveled in space.
The successful operation will bring the crew within the Moon's gravitational influence by Sunday morning, positioning them to surpass the distance record set by the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.
Approximately ten minutes after the thruster ignition, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen communicated with mission control, stating, "We are enjoying the beautiful view of the dark side of the Earth, illuminated by the Moon. It is absolutely spectacular."
Since their launch from Florida 26 hours prior, the astronauts' first day in space was largely dedicated to testing cameras, maneuvering the Orion spacecraft, and addressing minor issues, including those related to the onboard toilet and email system, which were subsequently resolved.
The crew had been operating in a highly elliptical Earth orbit, with one point as far as 43,000 miles (69,000 km) and another as close as approximately 100 miles from the planet. From this orbit, they initiated the critical Trans-Lunar Injection burn.
The maneuver commenced at 7:49 p.m. Eastern Time (23:49 GMT), serving as an exit from Earth's orbit. It propelled the capsule onto a figure-eight trajectory that will carry it toward the Moon. This was the mission's final major engine burn; for the remainder of the flight, the Orion capsule's path will be governed primarily by orbital mechanics.
Earlier on Thursday, while testing cameras from a distance of about 40,000 miles from Earth, Commander Reid Wiseman observed our planet as a diminishing sphere illuminated by the Sun. He remarked on the difficulty of adjusting camera exposure settings from that vantage point.
"It's like going into your backyard and trying to take a picture of the Moon. Now try to take a picture of the Earth; that's what it feels like," he said to mission control in Houston, while using an iPhone to photograph his home planet.
Wiseman also encountered a minor technical issue when his initial attempt to check email using Microsoft Outlook failed, but it was quickly resolved with assistance from mission control.
The four astronauts of NASA's Artemis II mission, which launched from Florida on Wednesday, brought several types of equipment to photograph their journey from inside the Orion capsule. These included small GoPro action cameras, iPhones, and professional Nikon cameras that NASA astronauts have used for years aboard the International Space Station.
NASA officials stated that the decision to equip the crew with iPhones was influenced by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, a billionaire astronaut who has flown on two private SpaceX Dragon missions and utilized the devices during his own flights.
Thus far, NASA has not released any images captured by the crew, but expects to share them during key moments later in the mission. One highly anticipated image is a new "Earthrise" photo, echoing the famous picture taken by Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders in 1968 as his spacecraft orbited the Moon.
On the sixth day of the mission, the astronauts are expected to reach a point approximately 252,000 miles from Earth, the farthest distance humans have ever traveled. From that point, Earth, viewed from the far side of the Moon's shadow, will appear no larger than a basketball.
Shortly after the successful launch, astronaut Christina Koch alerted mission control in Houston about an issue with the Orion spacecraft's toilet, located in a compartment only slightly larger than the interior of a minivan, where a red indicator light was flashing. NASA reported that mission engineers diagnosed and fixed the problem after conducting tests.
Toilets on spacecraft are often challenging to use but are essential for long-duration missions, and their designs vary significantly.
Aboard the International Space Station and the Orion capsule, astronauts use the Universal Waste Management System, a $24 million apparatus that uses suction to collect waste, recycles urine into water, and seals solid waste in bags that are eventually disposed of.
The toilet includes a specially shaped funnel and hose for urine collection and a seat for bowel movements. NASA's website notes that the funnel and seat can be used simultaneously, a feature incorporated based on feedback from female astronauts.
In contrast, astronauts on the Apollo missions in the 1960s and 70s used rudimentary bags attached to their bodies, which were then stored in the cabin or left on the Moon.
The Orion's toilet is closer to a traditional design and is separated from the main cabin by a small door.
Jeremy Hansen, a Canadian Space Agency astronaut on the Artemis II mission, said in a video last year that the toilet is "the only place on the mission where we can go and actually feel like we have a moment of solitude."
