How University Major Selection and Admissions Reflect the Nation's Future Trajectory

As August brings the release of college admission results across the provinces, countless young students are preparing to embark on their university journey. What they will study, how they will learn, and what outcomes they achieve deserve closer attention. For individual students, an admission result signifies a different city, a new environment, and a future path for work and life. Yet from a broader perspective, the choices and admissions tied to university majors are the product of multiple forces—the evolution of national higher education, industrial upgrading, and wider social development. They serve as a mirror reflecting the future direction of both the nation and society.

National demand as the core benchmark

In this year's admission results, the majors that saw the most widespread increases in admission cut-off scores were the emerging engineering disciplines, including integrated circuits, new energy, and high-end equipment manufacturing. In Guangdong Province, cut-off scores for these new engineering majors rose generally by 10 to 30 points, with ranking positions moving up by several thousand places. Hubei Province saw similar trends, with increases of 10 to 20 points and similar rank advancements. Demand drives development, and the popularity of university majors in the college entrance exam now closely mirrors the needs of industry.

According to the 2026 China College Graduate Employment Report released by MyCOS, a Chinese higher education consulting firm, the undergraduate "green card majors" for 2026 include electrical engineering and automation, microelectronics science and engineering, automation, energy and power engineering, vehicle engineering, and new energy science and engineering. These "green card majors" are defined as fields with consistently high employment quality and growing industrial demand. A common thread runs through them: they are urgently needed by the nation. For instance, automation has entered the "green card" list for the first time this year, largely driven by the talent demand from the intelligent transformation of manufacturing, prompting universities to invest more in this field. Microelectronics science and engineering has remained on the list for five consecutive years, closely tied to the nation's push for semiconductor self-sufficiency.

A candidate from Hebei, surnamed Qu, could have chosen business or science majors like international trade or physics when filling out his preferences. After discussing with his family, he ultimately selected the microelectronics science and engineering program at a "Double First-Class" university. "My parents and I deliberated repeatedly and finally chose an engineering major—it offers good employment prospects, and with the country continuously investing resources into the chip industry, there will surely be better development opportunities ahead," Qu told reporters.

In April this year, the Ministry of Education released the 2026 Undergraduate Catalogue of Regular Higher Education Institutions, explicitly stating that it aims to enhance higher education's support and contribution to high-quality development, guided by technological innovation, industrial development, and national strategic needs. To precisely align with national strategic demands, new majors such as energy science and engineering and deep earth science and engineering were added. To promote innovation in emerging and future industries, programs like biomanufacturing and brain-computer science and technology were introduced. Statistics show that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, over 10,200 new undergraduate program points were added nationwide, while 12,200 were revoked or suspended.

"The 'heat' of certain majors is anchored to the 'urgent needs' of the nation's industrial development strategy, and this is a key direction for the supply-side reform of higher education," said Song Guojie, an associate professor at Peking University's School of Intelligence who has long been involved in admissions work. He noted that the logic behind discipline layout in Chinese higher education is now to closely serve national strategic needs, and admissions efforts focus on explaining these factors to students and parents in detail, helping them choose majors that suit both their personal interests and the nation's requirements.

This alignment with national needs is also influencing enrollment at vocational and technical colleges. In the past, vocational schools often faced prejudice and were seen as a last resort. However, this year has seen a significant shift, especially for public undergraduate-level vocational institutions. Shenzhen Polytechnic University, an undergraduate-level vocational school, increased its physics-track undergraduate enrollment in Guangdong Province from 899 last year to 1,825 this year. Its admission cut-off line rose by 5 points compared to 2025, with the highest score reaching 610, which is 185 points above the province's undergraduate control line. The 610-point program was the electronic information engineering technology (experimental class), which, according to the university's official website, focuses on cultivating skilled talent for the consumer electronics, smart healthcare, and intelligent manufacturing industry clusters. More notably, the cut-off score for the electronic information program in Shenzhen Polytechnic University's associate degree admissions in Guangdong reached 497 points, exceeding the provincial undergraduate control line by 72 points. This demonstrates that under the guidance of national strategic needs and industrial upgrading, the advantages of higher vocational institutions in cultivating high-end skilled talent are becoming increasingly apparent, attracting more students. Among the 27 new vocational undergraduate and associate degree programs added by the Ministry of Education, there is a focus on expanding programs in the digital economy, low-altitude economy, artificial intelligence, and high-end equipment sectors, continuously improving the alignment between vocational education program structures and industrial demand.

Artificial intelligence's far-reaching impact

If one were to identify the hottest field in the first half of 2026, artificial intelligence would certainly claim a spot. As technology iterates rapidly, large models grow smarter, and application scenarios multiply, AI's impact on ordinary individuals is becoming increasingly evident. This enthusiasm is reflected in this year's college admission results. AI has become a top choice for students filling out their preferences. According to real-time data from Baidu's college entrance exam hot search platform, AI has consistently ranked among the top ten nationally in attention, even reaching the top three at times. This attention is mirrored in admission outcomes: in Zhejiang Province's 2026 general undergraduate admission data, Tongji University's AI program had a cut-off score of 677, with a planned enrollment of 6 students. Last year, the same program had a planned enrollment of 5 students with a minimum score of 673. Despite increased enrollment, the cut-off score still rose. Similar examples abound. Beijing University of Technology's AI (experimental class) had a cut-off score of 646 in Zhejiang last year, ranking at position 12,990. This year, it rose to 652, with a rank of 11,480. With the same planned enrollment, the score increased by 9 points and the rank improved by 1,510 places. Many parents report that AI programs at ordinary undergraduate institutions are also highly sought after. "As long as it's an AI major, it becomes popular regardless of the school," one parent said.

"In recent years, more and more students have been inquiring about AI majors. The acceleration of technological iteration and growing national support have captured the attention of students and parents alike," said Song Guojie. However, the rise of AI technology has also cooled interest in some disciplines, particularly certain liberal arts programs. There was once a "golden rule" in college application: majors like economics, management, and foreign languages were considered safe choices for liberal arts students. Yet, under the wave of AI technology, this rule is gradually losing its validity. Translation, a previously popular foreign language major, is a case in point. AI translation can now replace human labor in many scenarios, leading to a decline in interest in translation programs. Many pan-liberal arts and pan-management majors are also facing reduced enthusiasm from applicants, with corresponding cut-off scores generally declining.

"However, the development of AI technology also presents a new opportunity for liberal arts students. Without specialized skills like programming, they can use AI tools to design, develop, and iterate digital products on their own. Moreover, liberal arts students may possess certain unique advantages," Song Guojie told reporters.

Interdisciplinary integration holds great promise

Just as some admission cut-off scores rise, others fall. Clinical medicine has long been a popular choice, with cut-off scores and ranking positions consistently among the highest in each province. Yet, judging from this year's admission results across provinces, except for long-cycle medical programs at top-tier institutions, clinical medicine has seen varying degrees of decline in cut-off scores and ranking positions. Experts attribute this to factors such as high learning costs, high professional barriers, a saturated job market, and intense work pressure, all of which influence students' decisions. Additionally, the rise of new engineering majors has created stronger appeal for students. But the situation is not uniform. "In recent years, many interdisciplinary fields have emerged in medicine, gradually attracting the attention of students and parents," said Ma Chengchuan, an assistant professor at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. For example, directions combining clinical medicine with engineering technology and big data, biopharmaceuticals, and smart healthcare are all interdisciplinary programs that blend clinical medicine with other disciplines. These emerging interdisciplinary medical programs have seen their cut-off scores and ranking positions generally improve, sometimes even surpassing those of clinical medicine at certain institutions. "The shift from treating illness to promoting health has extended to the cultivation of medical talent, with increasing demand for versatile professionals across more specialized tracks," Ma analyzed.

The trend of interdisciplinary integration extends beyond medicine. The 2026 edition of the Undergraduate Catalogue of Regular Higher Education Institutions added a new "interdisciplinary" category, initially listing 11 existing programs such as future robotics and interdisciplinary engineering, along with four new programs: embodied intelligence, brain-computer science and technology, engineering internet, and deep earth science and engineering. "Previously, interdisciplinary studies were mostly autonomous explorations by universities. This year, the catalogue has formally established an interdisciplinary category, offering top-level design to encourage cross-disciplinary integration. This holds significant importance for students' growth and development," Song Guojie stated.

Business, liberal arts, and social science disciplines are also moving toward interdisciplinary integration in increasingly diverse forms. For instance, with China's continued opening-up, international rule of law within law studies has become a hot field. But mastering this major requires not only extensive legal knowledge but also proficiency in foreign languages, history, and other traditional liberal arts subjects, as well as knowledge of AI, digital technology, and other science and engineering fields.
