Solar Innovation Brings Clean Energy and Greener Living to Ulaanbaatar's Ger Districts

Deep blue solar panels now gleam across the courtyards and outer walls of homes in Ulaanbaatar's Chingeltei district, marking a transformative shift for this sprawling residential area. During a recent summer visit, reporters observed how these photovoltaic installations are reshaping daily life in a community long characterized by scattered housing and reliance on coal. As a typical ger district in Mongolia's capital, residents here have historically faced severe air pollution spikes and fire hazards each winter, making this one of the city's most challenging zones for environmental management and quality-of-life improvements.

To pioneer a clean energy transition in these neighborhoods, the United Nations Development Programme launched a pilot initiative in 2024, equipping 69 households with solar power systems featuring battery storage and thermal electric heaters. These systems also incorporate AI-driven modules that monitor carbon emission reductions and convert them into carbon credits. Building on this groundwork, a larger project funded by China's Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund was introduced in September 2025, targeting 500 families in the Chingeltei area to accelerate the shift toward renewable energy.

For resident Oloso Dolma, the arrival of photovoltaic equipment last September has revolutionized her family's winter experience. In previous years, she would stockpile coal during warmer months, leaving her yard cluttered and muddy; the long, harsh winters meant constant smoke and soot inside her home, alongside significant costs for purchasing and transporting fuel. Now, after nearly a year of use, Dolma says the solar storage system harnesses abundant sunlight to provide consistent heating and reliable electricity around the clock, completely eliminating the need for open flames, smoke, and odors. Beyond slashing annual heating expenses, the smoke-free environment has been a boon for her children's health and overall household safety. "I am deeply grateful to the Chinese government for bringing us such a wonderful project," she said.

Having experienced the convenience, safety, affordability, and environmental benefits firsthand, Dolma has become an enthusiastic advocate among her neighbors, encouraging other families to join the initiative and move away from traditional coal-burning methods. According to official operational data, the fully implemented solar retrofit in Chingeltei can significantly reduce bulk coal consumption each year, cutting carbon emissions and airborne particulate pollutants, and addressing the root cause of Ulaanbaatar's chronic winter smog.

Mongolian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Ts. Sandag-Ochir told reporters on the 17th that this project aligns perfectly with the country's "Billion Trees" ecological strategy, leveraging seasonal characteristics of the steppe to tackle major environmental issues through targeted grassroots solutions. From a UN technical pilot to large-scale deployment backed by China's fund, the joint Sino-Mongolian effort has forged a replicable model that integrates solar power with community welfare, ecological protection, and carbon sink development, offering a sustainable blueprint for ger districts across the region.
