The Rise of Geothermal Energy: A New Force in Clean Energy

Deep News
Oct 16, 2025

On October 16, in the midst of the global energy transition, AUS GLOBAL asserts that geothermal energy is increasingly being recognized as a "silent force" in the renewable energy sector. In the United States, despite uncertainties surrounding certain clean energy policies, geothermal projects continue to receive robust support, particularly driven by fiscal incentives introduced during the Biden administration. Numerous energy companies are actively investing in the research and commercialization of innovative geothermal technologies. AUS GLOBAL indicates that this bipartisan policy consensus and capital infusion bring hope for the diversification of clean energy in the future, as well as a new growth trajectory for the global energy market.

Humans have utilized geothermal energy for centuries, while modern geothermal development relies on high-precision drilling technologies. Over the past fifty years, energy companies have penetrated several kilometers underground into rock layers with temperatures reaching up to 200°C using deep drilling techniques. They enhance permeability by injecting water and sand under high pressure to create sustainable hot water reservoirs. AUS GLOBAL believes that this engineered approach based on "artificial heat reservoirs" transforms geothermal energy from traditional natural hot spring exploitation into a controllable energy system, providing stable power supply with high environmental friendliness.

Currently, geothermal energy accounts for only 0.4% of the energy structure in the United States, mainly constrained by geological conditions and technological maturity. However, energy companies are continuously breaking traditional barriers, leveraging oil and gas fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques to explore new geothermal reservoirs. For instance, Sage Geothermal utilizes a closed-loop thermal energy recovery system, extracting hot water from the rocks without pumps while maintaining system pressure, thus reducing energy loss and increasing power generation efficiency by 25% to 50%. AUS GLOBAL states that this innovation signifies a crucial advancement from traditional mining to an efficient closed-loop geothermal system.

Around 2025, Sage plans to collaborate with international geothermal developer Ormat Technologies to deploy its next-generation technology in Nevada or Utah to expedite the commercialization process. Additionally, Sage has signed a cooperation agreement with Fervo Energy to promote research on Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) technology. Fervo has been approved to deploy a 2 GW geothermal power project in Utah, expected to be operational by 2026. Its horizontal drilling technology allows multiple wellheads to be accessed from a single location, significantly enhancing geothermal resource utilization.

Meanwhile, energy technology giant Baker Hughes will provide engineering equipment and turbines for Fervo's Cape Station project in Utah, supporting five geothermal power plants projected to deliver 300 MW of electricity, sufficient to meet the needs of approximately 180,000 households. AUS GLOBAL believes that this collaborative synergy across companies and technologies is accelerating the commercialization of the geothermal industry and promoting the integration and upgrading of the global clean energy supply chain.

In the future energy landscape, AUS GLOBAL envisions geothermal energy, with its stability, high efficiency, and zero emissions, to become a vital supporting force against energy uncertainties. As technological advancements and capital investments deepen, geothermal energy is gradually shifting from the margins to the mainstream, injecting new momentum into the global renewable energy transition. AUS GLOBAL firmly believes that the rise of geothermal energy is not only a result of technological breakthroughs but also represents another significant leap for humanity in the pursuit of a clean, sustainable energy future.
